This article presents the 3rd Collection of the Musée de Lyon.

This is an introduction to contemporary art and content that could not be introduced previously.

Louis Janmot （1814-1892）

A Lyonist, Janmot was a French painter and poet.

Many of the works are strongly influenced by Catholicism.

Le Poème de l’âme (The Poem of the Soul), which we present here, was exhibited at the Universal Exposition of 1855.

Unfortunately, it was not well received at the time.

In all, the work, comprising 18 oil paintings and 16 drawings, depicts the transmigration of the soul.

Please note that only oil paintings will be presented at this time.

Created 1835-55.

1 Génération divine

It represents the birth of the soul.

2 Le Passage des âmes

The soul is guided from heaven to earth by guardian angels.

3 L’Ange et la mère

The mother is holding her young child (reincarnated soul).

A guardian angel prays to heaven.

4 Le Printemps

Boys wear pink and girls wear white.

It depicts the innocence of childhood.

5 Souvenir du ciel

Mulatière in Lyon is depicted in the background.

The connection between God and man is expressed through two children.

6 Le Toit paternel

Two children watch the lightning bolt by the window.

The grandmother reads poetry and the two women sew.

In the back, an old woman and a Janmot, aged about 30, are sitting.

7 Le Mauvais Sentier

It depicts a university corridor lined with teachers who, through false science, have to climb a staircase with no way out, with deceptive ideals and faith.

It may express the views of Janmot, a Catholic, on society at the time.

It is one that is difficult to interpret due to its historical background.

8 Cauchemar

An old woman (death) is trying to catch the girl and also the boy.

The boy’s feet are crumbling as he flees.

It depicts how humans are trying to corrupt innocent young souls.

9 Le Grain de blé

This is a scene where a priest is preaching the faith to two young men.

10 Première Communion

This is the scene of the first communion service in the Great Church of Saint-Jean.

Communion, also known as Holy Communion, is a ritual derived from Jesus’ Last Supper.

11 Virginitas

Happiness is pure of heart and the invisible is revealed to them.

12 L’Échelle d’or

As the couple sleep in the forest, nine angels appear on the stairs leading to God.

Each has a symbol associated with the arts and therefore pays homage to beauty and art.

13 Rayons de soleil

It expresses the fragility of earthly happiness.

A dark-haired woman is trying to seduce you.

14 Sur la Montagne

Two people who have gone through all the stages of love living in purity represent a stage in their spiritual journey.

15 Un Soir

Represents a problem of transition from childhood to adulthood.

16 Le Vol de l’âme

They left the mountain tops and left the real world behind.

17 L’Idéal

Their rapport reaches its highest point and the girl rises even higher.

However, He is anxious in the midst of all this.

18 Réalité

He is kneeling at the cross at the time of his first communion, indicating that he has lost her.

Pierre Puvis de Chavannes （1824-1898）

Le Bois sacré cher aux arts et aux muses (1884)

The work was commissioned by the city of Lyon in the 1880s.

Painted on the staircase in the south-east corner, it is a monumental work for the Musée de Lyon.

It depicts a sacred and artistic landscape.

Vision antique

The drawing on the left is inspired by ancient Greece.

Not pictured, but on the right side is a medieval or early Renaissance Italian landscape.

Italian contemporary painter and central figure in the Concrete Art (geometric abstraction) movement.

Serge Poliakoff （1900-1969）

Composition abstraite (1964)

He is a Russian painter belonging to the École de Paris.

René Duvillier （1919-2002）

Le viol de la vierge　（1959)

He is a French painter belonging to the École de Paris.

Georges Adilon　（1928-2009）

14-8/31-8 (1991)

He was an architect and a painter.

Christian Lhopital（1953-）

Danseurs (1985)

He is a contemporary artist born in Lyon.

Réfectoire Baroque

The Baroque Dining Room is located to the right of the entrance to the Musée de Lyon.

Unfortunately, the restoration work had not been completed at the time, so we were unable to go inside, but it is essentially a very impressive place to visit.

La Cène　(1680-1690)

It is by Louis Cretey (1635-1702).

Born in Lyon, Cretey was influenced by his stay in Rome and left behind a variety of works.

The Last Supper is a sight to behold, so be sure to stop by.

Le Bien et le Mal (1832)

It is about good and evil, but it seems to have a much deeper meaning.

Chenavard studied at the National School of Fine Arts with Delacroix and others in 1825.

He was a Lyon painter specialising in flowers.

It has won numerous awards, but was criticised by Baudelaire and others.

Adolphe Appian （1818-1898）

He is one of the painters of the Lyon School.

Jacques-Joseph Baile （1819-1856）

He was a Lyon painter who mainly painted flowers and fruits.

Joseph Alfred Bellet du Poisat （1823-1883）

Marguerite Gauthier-Lathuille (1879)

Manet played a pivotal role in the transition from realism to impressionism.

Considered a pioneer of Impressionism.

This work is also known as ‘The White Girl’.

Edgar Degas　（1834-1917）

Danseuses sur la scène (1889)

Degas’s works often deal with ballet.

The scene is a romantic ballet landscape.

He is also a founding member of the Impressionists.

However, he did not wish to belong to the Impressionist group.

Henri Fantin-Latour （1836-1904）

Les roses (1889)

French painter and lithographic printmaker.

He remains a very popular painter today.

Alfred Sisley （1839-1899）

La seine à marly (1876)

A French-born Englishman, Sisley left some 900 works during his lifetime, most of which depict scenes from the Paris area.

He is a leading impressionist artist.

This work depicts the River Seine in Marly, a suburb of Paris.

Together with Monet and others, he belonged to the Impressionist group, but from the 1880s onwards, he moved to Post-Impressionism.

He was one of the most influential painters in modern art.

The work depicts Château de Marcouville near Pontoise, France.

Claude Monet (1840-1926)

Charing Cross Bridge, la Tamise (1903)

This work depicts the Charing Cross Railway Bridge over the River Thames.

The Charing Cross Railway Bridge is depicted in a variety of patterns, as is Rouen Cathedral.

This is a view of the seafront captured from a hotel window.

Renoir is a leading Impressionist.

It is estimated that he painted nearly 4,000 works during his lifetime.

Morisot, an Impressionist painter and model for Manet.

Gauguin had a tumultuous life.

From stockbroker, to meeting Pissarro and becoming a painter, to living with Van Gogh and moving to Tahiti to live, just researching his life is enough to create an epic story.

His work is categorically post-impressionist.

This work was painted in Tahiti.

Jean Seignemartin （1848-1875）

Nature Morte 

Jean Seignemartin died at the young age of 27.

He is a leading Lyon painter.

Jean-François Raffaëlli （1850-1924）

Chez le fondeur (1886)

Raffaelli was not only a painter, but also a printmaker, sculptor and even an actor.

Henri Jean Guillaume Martin （1860-1943）

Labastide-du-Vert (1903-09)

He is a French post-impressionist painter.

Summary

Even for someone like me who is not very familiar with art, there were many painters whose names I had at least heard of at one time or another.

The 18th and 19th centuries were also the most spectacular period of French art.

It is perhaps no exaggeration to say that this period is what makes France, and Paris in particular, so appealing.

Sculptures

Laurent Marqueste （1848-1920）

Persée et la Gorgone (1890)

Sculptor, born in Toulouse, France.

Many are influenced by classical works.

Awarded the Grand Prize of Rome in 1871.

In 1900, won the Grand Prix at the Paris Exposition.

Five of these were made between 1875 and 1903 on the same theme.

Antoine Bourdelle　（1861-1929）

Héraklès archer (1909)

French sculptor.

In 1924 he was awarded the Legion of Honour.

He has worked on many masculine sculptures and memorial statues.

He is one of the leading sculptors of modern Europe.

‘Hercules the Bowler’ is the timeless masterpiece that made Bourdelle a household name.

Several versions are available and have been exhibited in museums around the world.

Antoine-Louis Barye （1795-1875）

Lion au serpent（1832）

He was a sculptor who worked mainly with animals.

The Lion and the Serpent, created in 1832, is his most famous work.

Jean-François Legendre-Héral （1796-1851）

Minerve（1837-1840）

A number of his works are on display at the Musée de Lyon.

Aristide Maillol （1861-1944）

La Montagne (1937)

Along with Rodin and Bourdelle, he is one of the leading sculptors of modern Europe.

Maillol started sculpting after the age of 40.

Until then, he had mainly worked as a painter.

Although he left a number of works, most of his work is centred on the female nude.

Antoine Étex （1808-1888）

Caïn et sa race maudits de Dieu (1832-39)

It is produced based on the biblical story of Cain.

It was presented at the Paris Salon in 1839 to high acclaim.

Albert-bartholome （1848-1928）

Monument aux morts (1895-1899)

This is a model of the monument in the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

Bartolomé was also a friend of Edgar Degas and initially focused on painting.

He began sculpting after his wife’s death and won the grand prize at the 1900 World’s Fair.

Auguste Rodin （1840-1917）

Minerve au casque (1905)

Rodin is known as the father of modern sculpture.

Even those who are not interested in art have heard of the name of a representative work, The Thinker.

Rodin, unusually for an artist of his time, did not have a professional schooling.

He took the Beaux-Arts de Paris three times and failed all three times.

He then made a living by working as a sculptor’s staff and decorator.

Rodin’s twenties were tumultuous: in 1862, at the age of 22, his sister died and he decided to enter a convent himself, but Peter Julian, then head of the convent, encouraged him to pursue a career in sculpture.

In 1864, at the age of 24, he met his wife, Rose Beuret.

Later, after the birth of his children, he worked for a while for Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse.

He was called up during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, but did not serve because of his short-sightedness and went to Belgium.

In Belgium, he worked as a decorator on the stock exchange.

In 1875, he travelled to Italy to see works of art.

In Italy, he was struck by Michelangelo’s work, and returned to work on it.

In 1877, at the age of 37, he finally returned to Paris.

He presented L’Âge d’airain (The Age of Bronze), but was suspected of being extremely realistic, and later made his reputation known throughout France by creating a work larger than a real-size man (Saint Jean Baptiste).

In 1880, he was commissioned to create a monument for the construction of a museum, and began work on the work that was to adorn it: the Gates of Hell.

However, the story subsequently died out, but Rodin devoted his subsequent activities to the production of The Gates of Hell.

In 1882, he succeeded Alfred Boucher as lecturer in sculpture.

Here he meets Camille Claudel.

Created Les Bourgeois de Calais (Citizens of Calais) in 1895.

Sarcophage and other products are also placed there.

He is a pioneer of the Art Nouveau movement.

Peintures

Claude Guinet　（　-1512）

Sainte-Catherine　（1507）

Guinet was also a glassmaker and painter.

Le Pérugin (Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci) (1448-1523)

Saint Herculan et saint Jacques (1505)

Perugino, a Renaissance painter.

The reason why he is called by a different name from his real name is because he was selected as an honorary citizen of Perugia in 1485.

His achievements are very significant and he is famous for his murals in the Vatican and Sistine Chapel.

He was also the mentor of the young Raphael and had a great influence on him.

The work depicts St Herculan, Bishop of Perugia, and St Jacques, one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus.

Gerard David （1460-1523）

La Lignée de sainte Anne (1490-1500)

David was an early Dutch painter, mainly focusing on religious paintings.

This work, in the form of the ‘Tree of Jesse’, depicts the genealogy of St Ann, the mother of the Virgin Mary.

Lorenzo Costa （1460-1535）

La Nativité (1490)

Italy Renaissance painter.

The work is a scene from the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

Paolo Veronese (1528-1588)

Bathsabee au bain (1575)

Paolo Veronese is sometimes referred to as PAOLO CALIARI.

He is regarded as one of the most important Venetian painters of the late Renaissance.

The Wedding at Cana, on display in the Louvre, is one of his most highly regarded works.

L’adoration des mages 

Moïse sauvé des eaux (1570-80)

This is the scene of Moses being saved from the water.

Jan Brueghel l’Ancien （1568-1625）

L’air (1611) La Terre (1610)

Also known as flower Bruegel.

A number of works were produced in collaboration with Rubens.

Le Feu (1606)  L’Eau 

These works depict the four elements L’air (air or wind), La Terre (earth), Le Feu (fire) and L’Eau (water).

In Europe, from ancient times until the 18th and 19th centuries, the idea that the world consisted of these four elements was widely held.

Sébastien Vrancx （1573-1647）

Énée retrouvant son père aux Champs-Élysées (1597-1607)

Vrancx was a Flemish Baroque painter who made many works depicting battle scenes.

Guido Reni （1575-1642）

L’Assomption de la Vierge (1637)

An Italian painter of the Baroque period, Leni produced a number of religious and mythological paintings.

The work initially depicted God in a semi-circle.

Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640）

Saint Dominique et Saint François préservant le monde de la colère du Christ (1618-20)

Rubens is said to have had the greatest influence on the Baroque style.

It can be seen from his work that he had a deep knowledge of Christianity and classical literature.

His workshop in Antwerp received large orders from aristocrats from all over Europe.

L’adoration des Mages (1617-1618)

It depicts a scene from the Adoration of the Magi (Adoration of the Three Eastern Doctors).

Sisto Badalocchio （1581-1620？）

Vierge et l’Enfant entre saint Benoît et saint Quentin (1618)

As a painter and sculptor, he left behind a number of works.

Giovanni Lanfranco （1582-1647）

Saint Conrad Confalonieri (1618)

Italian painter representative of the Baroque period.

Le Guerchin （1591-1666）

La Circoncision (1646)

Guercino was an Italian painter of the Baroque period.

There is a difference in style between the earlier and later periods, with the later period being more influenced by Guido Reni.

He also painted at a very fast pace and left behind a considerable body of work.

The work depicts Jesus being circumcised in Jerusalem.

Nicolas Poussin （1594-1665）

La Mort de Chioné (1622)

French painter of the Baroque period.

The production was based in Rome.

Although he was a Baroque painter, his work is often historical, religious and classicist.

This work is from Poussin’s early years.

La Fuite en Égypte (1657)

This work depicts scenes from the Exodus.

Pierre de Cortone （1596-1669）

César remet Cléopâtre sur le trône d’Egypte (1637)

Italian painter of the early Baroque period.

The work depicts a scene in which Caesar returns Cleopatra to the throne.

Guido Cagnacci （1601-1663）

This work has not been published as it may be in breach of Google’s policies.

Lucrèce (1657)

Cagnacci was a Baroque painter, working predominantly in the light/dark method and sensuality.

Antonio de Pereda （1611-1678）

L’Immaculée Conception (1634)

Spanish Baroque painter.

The work will be Immaculate Conception.

Nicolas Chaperon （1612-1656）

La Charité de Saint Anne 

He was strongly influenced by Italy, having spent some time in Rome in 1642.

Thomas Blanchet（1614-1689）

Le Sacrifice de la fille de Jephté (1670-1680)

Thomas Blanchet lived in Rome from 1645 to 1653, where he was strongly influenced by Italian Classicism, and his work is highly energetic.

Giovan Battista Langetti　（1625-1676）

le bon samaritan (1660)

Late Italian Baroque painter.

The theme of the work is The Good Samaritan.

Jean Jouvenet （1644-1717）

Le Repas chez Simon (1706)

Jouvenet painted mainly religious paintings.

Many of his works are in the Louvre.

This piece is a scene from the biblical account of a meal in the Simon household.

Jean II Restout （1692-1768）

L’exaltation de la croix (1748)

He grew up in a family of painters, including his uncle, father and brother.

Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni （1695-1766）

Ruines romaines 

Rather than a painter, he was an architect and decorator for the opera and other events.

He was multi-talented.

History

Before the Revolution, it was used as the Royal Abbey of Saint Pierre.

1801 The Decree of Chaptal comes into force, which provides for the exhibition of collections of paintings in 15 French cities.

1803 The above decree is received and opened to the public.

1834 The museum is extended by the architect R. Dardel (1796-1871).

Time required

The museum is considerably larger than its exterior image.

A normal visit would take about one and a half hours.

A thorough tour would take at least two hours.

The museum should be visited with enough time to spare.

This map shows the ground floor, so enter from ‘A’, go through the courtyard and enter the museum at ‘B’.

At the back of the photo is the Plaza de la Terreau, where you enter the courtyard once through the security checkpoint.

Entry to the courtyard is free.

Benches are also available for resting.

Past the courtyard is the entrance to the museum, which is immediately to the right after entry.

There is a ticket counter here, where you can purchase tickets if you do not have them.

Lockers are available, so please leave any unnecessary luggage in the lockers.

The ground floor mainly displays sculptures.

First floor

Then head to the first floor above ground level.

Proceed in order, starting at number 101 on the left.

Various objects and other items can be seen, ranging from the Egyptian civilisation to Greek, Roman, Renaissance and modern.

In addition, there is a café and gift shop on this floor.

Second floor

The next level is the second floor above ground.

Proceed in order, starting with number 201 on the right.

On this floor, paintings from the 14th century to the present day are the main focus.

It is also on this floor that works by famous painters you may know are exhibited.

It is the work of the Renaissance painter Perugino.

The work is said to have taken three years to complete for the church altarpiece in 1495.

On the first floor of the Musée de Lyon, there is a café & restaurant.

The seating is a bit lonely, but the walls are decorated with paintings by Raoul Dufy.

During the summer months, it is possible to dine on the terrace.

Prices range from €9 for entrees to €16 for mains to €6 for desserts.

Opening hours: 10:00~17:30

Closed: Tuesdays, public holidays.

Summary

The first room of sculptures is quite spectacular, followed by works from various periods, from the Egyptian civilisation, through Greece and Rome.

Furthermore, you can see paintings by a number of famous artists on the top floor, which is quite satisfying.

This is a must-visit attraction when visiting Lyon.

Notre Dame Cathedral, a World Heritage Site on the Fourvière hill.

The Notre-Dame de Lyon cathedral is characterised by its two-storey upper and lower structure, a rarity in the world.

The upper floors are opulent and luxurious, while the lower floors are simple and solemn.

With two churches with completely different images combined into one, Notre-Dame Cathedral is truly a highlight of Lyon tourism.

Let me now introduce you to some of them.

La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière

Opening hours: 07:00~19:00 (admission may not be possible during masses, etc.).

Time required

In front of the cathedral, it doesn’t seem that big, but once inside, there is a lot to see, so it will take you longer than you think.

The cathedral consists of two structures, one on the ground floor and the other in the basement, so you will be visiting two churches.

The view over the city of Lyon from the top of the hill is also worth seeing, so time must be taken into account.

You will probably need at least one hour for the cathedral and 15 minutes for the view from the hill, for a total of about 1 hour 15 minutes.

If you look at everything quickly, you can probably fit it all in an hour, but if you look at it slowly and carefully, you may need an hour and a half to two hours.

History

Before cathedral construction

1168 A church was built by Olivier de Chavannes on the Fourvière hill.

1562 The church was destroyed by the Protestant troops of the Baron des Adrets.

At the end of the 16th century, the church was rebuilt.

In 1848, Joseph-Hugues Fabisch (1812-1886) conceived the idea of decorating the bell tower section of the church with the Golden Virgin.

It was actually displayed in 1852.

This is the origin of the Festival of Lights, which still takes place on 8 December.

Cathedral construction

Construction began in 1872 and was completed in 1896.

The funding for the project was provided by private donations.

Built by architects Pierre Bossan (1814-1888) and Louis Sainte-Marie Perrin (1835-1917).

Designed by Romanesque and Byzantine architecture.

Exterior

The cathedral is 86 metres long, 35 metres wide, 48 metres high and consists of four towers.

The two towers facing the city of Lyon are la Prudence and Tempérance.

The two towers facing the square are la Force and la Justice.

Towards the front, the tower on the left is la Force.

The tower on the right is la Justice.

This tower is Tempérance.

At the far right is LA CHAPELLE DE LA VIERGE (Chapel of Our Lady).

It is a little difficult to see in the photo, but at the top is a golden St Mary’s.

To the left of the cathedral is the Tour métallique de Fourvière (1892-1894).

It is very similar in shape to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

It used to be possible to climb it, but now it is only used by TV and other relay stations.

A statue of pape Jean Paul II (John Paul II) is erected in front of the cathedral.

This tower is la Force.

This is a statue of St Michael.

Sculptor Paul-Émile Millefaut (1848-1907), depicting St Michael slaying the dragon.

The entrance to the upper church.

The bronze doors were designed by Louis Sainte-Marie-Perrin and the area around the entrance was made to resemble Noah’s Ark.

The lion at the entrance was made by Charles Dufraine (1827-1900).

Interior

The interior of Notre-Dame Cathedral is very special, consisting of two churches, upper and lower.

I have seen many churches in Europe and this style is really rare.

The upper side is very richly made, while the lower side is rather plainly made.

The upper side, in particular, is made with great attention to materials, with white marble from Carrara, pink granite from northern Italy, blue marble from Savoy, green onyx and pieces of silver and gold.

The first thing that strikes you when you enter the church is its opulence.

Between 1632 and 1638, Louis XIII took a vow to consecrate France to the Virgin Mary if she gave him an heir.

In fact, they have since been blessed with two heirs.

la Bataille de Lépante (The Battle of Lepanto).

It depicts a naval battle in 1571 between the Ottoman Empire and the allied forces of Spain, the Pope and others.

The Allied victories had a profound impact on European history.

Le Choeur (The Altar) was made by Paul-Émile Millefaut (1848-1907) in 1892.

St Mary’s shows that she will break the bondage of Adam and Eve and deliver them from hell.

The floors are also very nicely made of various types of marble.

The ceiling, the walls as well as the floor should be appreciated.

LA CRYPTE

la sagess (1898-1900)

There is a sculpture by Charles Dufraine (1827-1900) on the steps from the upper church to the lower church.

Named la sagess (the wise man), it is said to be his last work.

The church was built for Saint Joseph.

It is very quiet, a complete change from the upper church.

The altar is dedicated to Saint Joseph.

Although not visible in the photo, the floor on which the statue of St Joseph is placed depicts the Seven Deadly Sins.

By depicting these ‘seven deadly sins’ at his feet, St Joseph shows that he controls them.

In other words, it is a symbol of the triumph of good over evil.

The ceiling, which is divided into four sections, has an upper church atmosphere.

Notre-Dame de Guadalupe 

On display since 2014.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Virgin who appeared in Guadalupe, Mexico, in 1531.

Notre-Dame de czestochowa

On display since 2002.

It was brought from Jerusalem in 1832 and enshrined in the Yasna Gula Monastery.

Notre dame de Fatima

In 1916, Our Lady appeared to the three children.

It is said to have conveyed various messages.

The Fatima Third Prophecy is a well-known story.

The Irish Madonna of Gyor

In 1697, the Virgin is said to have shed tears of blood for three hours.

Notre dame d’Afrique

Dedicated to the cathedral in Algiers, Africa, 1872.

Notre dame du Liban

This giant 15-tonne bronze statue was founded in 1904.

Notre dame de la Naval

It is said that in 1646, when the Dutch army attacked the city, the victory was won by praying to the Virgin.

Notre dame de velankanni

Our Lady of the Virgin, who was manifested in Bellankani, India.

It appeared twice in the 16th century and, in the 17th century, is said to have rescued Portuguese sailors.

The views from Fourvières Hill are very spectacular.

It offers a panoramic view of the city of Lyon.

It can be seen from the right, but the space is larger and easier to see from the left.

Summary

The order in which the churches are introduced this time is from the upper church to the lower church, but Pierre Bossan’s intention seems to be that the correct route is from the lower church to the upper church.

I myself ended up visiting from the upper church, but I would recommend that future visitors visit from the lower church to the upper church.

There is a lot to see, but the church itself is not very large.

Even if you look at it slowly, you should only need about 40 minutes.

If you look at it quickly, you can look around for half an hour, and even if you look at it quite slowly, an hour is enough time to see it all.

History

It is dedicated to St Jean-Baptiste, cousin of Jesus, prophet and martyr.

Construction began in 1175 and was completed in 1480.

It took almost 300 years to complete the church.

During construction, the ground was poor due to its proximity to the Saône River and frequent accidents occurred.

1245: First Council of Lyon held.

1271: reception of the remains of St Louis, who died in Tunis.

1316: Coronation of Pope John XXII.

1395: an 8 m diameter rose window was made by Jacques de Vosges.

1562: part of the church is destroyed by Calvinist troops.

1598: an astronomical clock is built by Nicolas Lippius. Bells ring at 12, 14, 15 and 16 o’clock.

1600: Marriage of Henri IV and Marie de Medicis.

1622: The bell is cast. It is said to weigh approximately 8-9 tonnes.

1805: Napoléon I and Josephine received by the emperor’s uncle, Cardinal Fesch.

1842: organ purchased by Cardinal de Bonald.

The cathedral is 79 metres long, 26 metres wide and 32 metres high (main arch).

Exterior

The cathedral is very majestic when viewed from Saint-Jean Square.

The western façade is in classical Gothic style, with three portals.

The rose window is a distinctive feature.

In Place Saint-Jean, there is a Renaissance-style fountain called La fontaine Saint-Jean.

1844 Built by a Lyon architect named René Dardel (1796-1871).

The statues in the fountain were sculpted by Jean-Marie Bonnassieux (1810-1892) and decorated by Félix Bernasconi.

It is produced on the theme of “St John baptising Christ.”

Interior

Stained glass

The interior of the Great Church of Saint-Jean is rather simple.

However, as it is a historic church, there are a number of works of historical value.

If you go through them one by one, it may take you longer than you think.

Among the many works, we would like to introduce a few that we would like you to visit.

The back altar at the front is lit by stained glass, enhancing its beauty.

The stained glass below, with a pointed arch at the top, is called a lancette.

This design is found in early Gothic architecture.

The lancet appears to be only five pieces in the picture, but in fact there are seven pieces in total, depicted in the following themes, starting from the left.

• Stephen’s apostolate.
• Christ’s childhood
• Resurrection of Lazarus
• Rédemption (Redemption)
• Life of Jean-Baptiste (John)
• Apostle Jean
• Cyprian

The rose window at the top of the transept.

The transept is the part of the wing nave. (This includes the part of the nave that intersects it.)

The rose window, said to have been completed in 1395, has eight different stained glass windows depicting the lives of Saint Jean-Baptiste and Saint Étienne.

The ceiling is structured in six sections.

The light pouring through the stained glass is gentle.

Created in 1846 by Louis Gugnon and Charles Maréchal.

This stained glass window was created by Brigitte Simon.

It depicts scenes from the Old Testament.

Paintings

There are many religious paintings on display in the church.

A variety of works, from famous painters to works of great religious value, are on display, so be sure to pay attention to these when visiting the church.

Lyon Astronomical clock

L’horloge astronomique

The astronomical clock, installed in 1379, is one of the oldest in Europe.

Its current size is 2.2 metres wide and 9.35 metres high.

Astronomical clocks, like ordinary clocks, show the time and date.

Characteristically, it also displays eclipses, phases of the moon, movements of the solar system and religious events.

Summary

The Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a must-see attraction in Lyon, not only for the view of the building, but also for the interior.

The surrounding area is also registered as a World Heritage Site as the Historic Centre of Lyon.

If you stroll through the old town and look at the churches, you will get a sense of the history of the city.

Most of them are described in French as Fresque, which actually means mural or fresco.

It is estimated that there are more than 100 trompe l’oeil paintings in Lyon, both in the city and in the suburbs.

Fresque des Lyonnais

Standing on the banks of the Saône River, this trompe l’oeil painting is one of Lyon’s most famous.

Even if you have limited time for sightseeing, manage to stop here at least once.

The location, on the Saône River, makes it easy to integrate into the tourist route.

The walls are painted with 30 of Lyon’s most famous people.

This work was inspired by the “Fresque des balcons de Barcelone” painted in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992, when the then Mayor of Lyon asked an artists’ co-operative to create a similar work for the city of Lyon.

Of course, non-celebrities are also depicted, and at a quick glance, they look quite close to the real thing.

The ground floor is also very well drawn and feels quite realistic.

From a distance it looks like people are walking.

It depicts Mr Paul Bocuse, a Lyon celebrity.

It is also subtly depicted on the back of the building.

It makes it more realistic.

30 people painted on the wall

Famous people depicted in the Fresque des Lyonnais, a list of 30 people.

Most of them were born in Lyon.

Viewing them in person and comparing them with each other on site doubles the enjoyment.

It is quoted and extracted from nearly 500 books.

Trompe l’oeil paintings are painted all the way to the top floor of the building.

It is located on the corner of rue Pêcheri and rue Platiere, so it was surprisingly difficult to find the best vantage point when trying to take a picture of the whole area.

The ground floor is very realistically painted.

It is a trompe l’oeil picture that is fun to look at.

 Le mur des canuts

Produced in 1987.

The trompe l’oeil has been frequently rewritten.

The painting depicts the Canuts area, where many workers worked in the 19th century, as is typical of Lyon, which developed as a silk weaving town.

There is a lot to see, especially the central staircase, which seems to have a real depth to it.

The people depicted are very lively.

Even the back of the staircase is realistically depicted.

It looks like there really is a bank on the corner of the building

Le mur des canuts is very impressive, but there is one problem.

It is the place.

Unfortunately, in order to see the sights, you have to take the C line at Hôtel de Ville, the metro in the centre, to the station called Henon.

It is a short walk from the station, but may take between 30 minutes and an hour depending on the C line connection.

Plan your sightseeing route well in advance.

Summary

We have introduced three of the most representative trompe l’oeil paintings in Lyon.

All three of these have their own characteristics and different atmospheres and can be very enjoyable.

Fresque des Lyonnais and Fresque La bibliothèque de la cité are also within walking distance.

It is recommended to see the two together, as they are easily reached by walking along the Saône River.

Only Le mur des canuts is a little further away, so see how well you can combine it with your own tourist route.

This authentic restaurant offers a French menu as well as afternoon tea.

In 1990, the second generation, JEAN-JACQUES BERNACHON, took over.

In 2010, Candice, Stephanie and Philippe took over as the third generation.

Since 2011, the company has taken on the challenge of various international projects, including an online shop.

The shop is located on Franklin Roosevelt Square, which is also a major street.

Eclairs are a welcome treat for travellers, as they can be eaten immediately on the spot.

The taste is slightly different from the eclairs you get in Paris.

It is very tasty and has a strong cocoa flavour

Bernachon is a must-stop shop when in Lyon.

The shop is of a very high standard, true to its reputation.

I bought about 20 chocolates for myself, and the overall impression is of a strong cocoa chocolate.

I’ve eaten quite a lot of chocolate in Paris, but it’s a bit different again.

There are many other chocolate shops in Lyon, but it is advisable to start with Bernachon.

Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is one of the most popular attractions in the gastronomic city of Lyon.

It is said to have a long history, dating back to 1859.

The current market was renovated in 2004 and is very clean and crowded with many shops.

More than 200 seasonal cheeses are always available.

If you like cheese, buy it here first.

Chez Léon

The restaurant seats about 20 and serves seafood and wine.

This is the best place to eat fresh oysters.

Unfortunately, it was closed that day, probably because it was too late to visit.

Boulangerie Jocteur

This is one of the best bakeries in Lyon.

I bought some bread to eat on the way home.

The bread from Praline was a little more subtle than I had hoped.

If you are staying in a hotel or other accommodation with a kitchen, you are encouraged to buy one.

Meilleur Ouvrier de France and winner in 2016.

Ham, sausages and salami are very tasty.

MAISON Malartre – Caroline & Julie

If you want to try escargot, this is the place to go.

There is plenty of seating, so you can sit and eat at your leisure.

Beillevaire

It is famous for its butter and has a strong image of butter sandwiches, cheesecakes and cookies, but here it is more like a cheese shop.

You can also eat in the shop.

Recommended for butter and cheese lovers.

Délices des sens

This is the place to go for delicious cakes.

The flan was very tasty.

It is a small shop, but has a wide variety.

Croissants are also available.

All cakes look delicious.

I bought a lot of chocolates and left. They were very tasty.

Personally, this is the best place to buy bread, cakes and chocolates in the market.

The prices are reasonable.

We stopped at the end of our trip this time and felt that the selection of products in some shops seemed to be thinning as the evening approached.

Public transport – metro, tram and bus – is an essential part of sightseeing in Lyon.

The name of this public transport system is TCL (Transports en commun lyonnais).

It has a long history and is said to date back to 1855, although the name is not the same as it is today.

It currently has the following transport networks.

• Four metro lines.
• Two cable cars
• 5 Trams.
• 120 street buses and 9 trolley buses
• 4 night buses
• Five on-demand transport lines.

The metro and cable cars will be the most active for sightseeing.

Trams are also attractive, but are unlikely to be used much.

How to buy

This time, I came to Lyon from Paris, so I bought my tickets from a ticket machine at Gare Part-Dieu – Vivier Merle on metro line B.

As soon as you go down the stairs on Marius Vivier Merle Street, you will see a ticket machine in front of you.

Both are the same, so choose whichever is available.

A price list is also displayed on the top of the screen.

The first screen looks like this.

There is a screen in the centre and three buttons at the bottom.

The leftmost red button, ‘Annuler‘, is the cancel button.

The scroll bar in the middle marked ‘Sélectionner‘ means selection and can be moved up or down to select.

The rightmost green button, ‘Confirmer‘, is the confirm or decide button.

Now let’s get on with it and buy tickets.

The first step is to select the language.

If you prefer English, select the British flag symbol and choose.

In this case, we will continue with the French display.

The ticket selection screen is now displayed.

Please select the option that best suits your needs.

This time, buy a 24 hr ticket.

Under ‘Sélectionner’, select the second from the top to finalise.

If you would like to order tickets other than those shown here, select ‘Page suivante’ at the bottom of the screen and the following page will appear.

Here we choose for two people.

Confirmation screen for the selected ticket.

If it is displayed incorrectly, press the Cancel button.

Note that, as indicated on the screen, cash is not accepted at ticket machines.

A credit card with an IC chip is required for purchases.

This is followed by the payment screen.

Insert the credit card where the green light on the far right is lit and enter the PIN.

Once approved, the ticket comes out of the bottom ejector.

Do not lose your ticket.

Summary

There are no difficult options for purchasing tickets.

This time, I spent about five hours in Lyon, but I would use it at least eight times to visit the main sights.

A normal ticket costs 1.9€ each, so eight uses would cost 15.2€.
I am still glad I bought the 24-hour ticket.

Also, if you change your plans mid-trip or want to take a tram, you can do so without hesitation, so an unlimited ride ticket is still recommended for sightseeing in Lyon.
