In this issue, we would like to briefly introduce some of the vast collection.

Auguste Rodin（1840-1917）

Rodin is known as the father of modern sculpture.

Even those who are not interested in art have heard of the name of a representative work, The Thinker.

Rodin, unusually for an artist of his time, did not have a professional schooling.

He has taken the Beaux-Arts de Paris three times and failed all three times.

He then worked for a living as a sculptor’s staff and decorator.

Rodin’s twenties were tumultuous: in 1862, at the age of 22, his sister died and he decided to enter a convent himself, but Peter Julian, then head of the convent, encouraged him to pursue a career in sculpture.

In 1864, at the age of 24, he met his wife, Rose Beuret.

Later, after the birth of his children, he worked for a while for Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse.

He was called up during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, but did not serve because of his short-sightedness and went to Belgium.

In Belgium, he worked as a decorator on the stock exchange.

In 1875, he travelled to Italy to see works of art.

In Italy, he was struck by Michelangelo’s work, and returned to work on it.

In 1877, at the age of 37, He finally returned to Paris.

He presented L’Âge d’airain (The Age of Bronze), but was suspected of being extremely realistic, and later made his reputation known throughout France by creating a work larger than a real-size man (Saint Jean Baptiste).

In 1880, he was commissioned to create a monument for the construction of a museum, and began work on the work that was to adorn it: the Gates of Hell.

However, the order was subsequently dropped, but Rodin devoted his subsequent activities to the production of The Gates of Hell.

In 1882, he succeeded Alfred Boucher as lecturer in sculpture.

Here he meets Camille Claudel.

LE PENSEUR　1903

In the garden, surrounded by trees, is Rodin’s famous work, LE PENSEUR (The Thinker).

The work was originally named Le Poète (The Poet).

It was to be displayed above Rodin’s masterpiece, The Gates of Hell.

It is also on display in the museum.

Bronze statue modelled on Honoré de Balzac.

Balzac, one of the most important writers of the 19th century, starts a project to build a memorial after his death.

Rodin took over the production of the work halfway through, and was quite immersed in it.

MUSE WHISTLER NUE, BRAS COUPÉS　1908

Work produced as a memorial project for James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903).

Whistler was an American painter, working mainly in London.

Cybèle, grand modèle　1905

It is said to be one of Rodin’s first bronzes.

LA PORTE DE L’ENFER　1880-1890

LA PORTE DE L’ENFER (The Gates of Hell), one of Rodin’s most famous works.

It represents the entrance to Hell in the third song of the Inferno of the Divine Comedy by the Italian poet Dante.

MONUMENT DES BOURGEOIS DE CALAIS　1889

This is another of Rodin’s masterpieces, Citizens of Calais.

In 1347, during the Anglo-French Hundred Years War, when the French port town of Calais was under siege, the English condition of surrender was to execute six men representing Calais.

It shows the six of them at that time.

(No executions actually took place.)

It is also on display in the museum.

Summary

Some of the works in the collection of the Rodin Museum have been presented.

Rodin’s work, large and small, shows that he was very active in his art-making and very particular about the details of the human body’s movements.

I used to think of Rodin as a ‘thinker’, but in fact he is not, and perhaps it is correct to say that Rodin = ‘Citizen of Calais’ or ‘Gates of Hell’.

History

Rodin used it as his studio for 10 years from 1908.

The Rodin Museum opened in 1919.

The l’hôtel Biron, where Rodin’s works are exhibited, was completed in 1732.

When the government decided to purchase the Hotel Billon in 1911, Rodin asked to keep the building as a museum in return for donating his work to the government.

Rodin’s request was heeded and the museum was not demolished but continued as a museum.

Unfortunately, Rodin died before the museum opened.

Time required

As well as sculptures, there are also paintings on display, so you can look around without getting bored.

There are many Rodin’s works, not only in the museum but also in the gardens, so it will take you quite some time to look around.

If you look around quickly, you can see the whole place in 40 minutes in the museum and 30 minutes in the gardens, or 1 hour 30 minutes overall.

However, the gardens are large, so it will take two to three hours if you take your time to look at the artworks and admire the gardens.

(We recommend that you allow plenty of time for your visit, especially during the pleasant months and when the roses are in bloom, as the gardens are very spectacular).

The word ‘museum’ gives the impression of a collection of famous paintings, but in fact the museum displays the various works and trajectories of Yves Saint Laurent, one of the most famous designers of the 20th century.

The actual entrance, as marked on the building, is on rue Léons Reynaud.

The entrance is rather small.

You will easily recognise the staff standing there.

The overall impression is of a building with no particular features.

(It is a very common building in Paris.)

There is not much to see on the exterior.

Interior

To access the museum, head up the stairs to the second floor.

There is a reception desk, where you can buy tickets if you don’t have them.

If you have booked online, just show your ticket.

There is a room to the left of reception, where you can also see Mr Saint Laurent’s work.

Sketch drawings are the main focus.

There is a spacious room at the back, but this is a dead end.

There were sketches of the work.

Photos of Mr Saint Laurent as a young man can be seen.

There was also a collaboration with The Simpsons.

Next, enter the main room from the right side of reception.

The artworks are decorated in neon.

Haute couture creations are on display.

After this area, stairs lead to the next floor.

The route is confusing.

Gorgeous dresses and gorgeous coats are on display.

The walls are decorated with enchanting accessories.

This is another very attractive accessory.

In the next room, visitors can see Mr Saint Laurent’s Atelier.

This is the atelier that was actually used.

It is as if he was here just a few moments ago creating his artwork.

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum is a hot new spot in Paris.

The overall impression was, to be honest, a little underwhelming.

This is difficult to describe, but my impression is that the museum is more for people with some knowledge of clothing than for visual enjoyment.

It is more suitable for those working or studying in the clothing industry than for the general public.

I love fashion too, but I still get the impression that it is a bit of a specialised museum.

Recommended for those who have time to spare during their stay or who have been to Paris many times.

History and Features

A mansion with a garden was built in the late 19th century.

In 1882, Jules Marmottan became the owner of the mansion.

When he died in 1883, Jules Marmottan, a well-known art lover, left a substantial fortune and many works of art to his son, Paul Marmottan.

Paul Marmottan, born in 1856, also immersed himself in the study of history and art, and collected his own collection.

The entire building was renovated, especially the furniture, which was brought from the Tuileries Palace and Palazzo Reale di Portici in Naples.

In 1932, upon his death, his works and residence were donated to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.

In 1934, it was opened to the public as a museum.

In 1966, with the donation of Claude Monet’s son, Michel Monet, the museum became home to the largest collection of Monet in the world.

The museum will be known as Musée Marmottan Monet.

The descendants of the artists continued to follow Michel Monet’s example with numerous donations of their works.

Take Metro line 9 to La Muette station and walk down Muette Street to LA Gare, a restaurant that used to be a train station.

Continue walking straight down Rue des Muets, past Jardin du Ranelagh, until you come to a fork.

At the end of the fork, there is a sidewalk where cars are not allowed, so keep going straight.

The garden is a relaxing place to relax.

It is a great place to visit in the warmer months as there are not many people around.

When you reach the end of the street, you will see the Marmottan Monet Museum on your right.

It takes about 10 to 15 minutes from the station, so you won’t feel far away.

The entrance can be found by walking along the road.

The entrance was surprisingly small, so I was a little surprised.

However, there are posters of events on display, so I don’t think you can go wrong.

Time required

The Marmottan Monet Museum consists of three floors: the basement, the zero floor, and the first floor.

Overall, it’s not very large, but each room is worth seeing, so it may take a little longer than you think.

If you just walk around, you can see it in about an hour, but if you’re looking at this page, you’re probably interested in Monet, so you’ll want about two hours.

The museum is basically empty, so you can take your time to appreciate each piece.

Highlights

The works on display in the museum are, of course, all wonderful, but the museum itself is just as full of attractions.

The exterior of the hotel is, of course, lovely, but the interior is decorated with a variety of furnishings and all the rooms are very nice.

Not only are there countless works of art displayed on the blue-green wall color, but the dining utensils such as tables, chairs, and candle stands are also eye-catching.

And a beautiful chandelier.

It’s a museum, but I feel like I’m in some nice mansion.

L’Amour et Psyché 

Antonio Canova (1757-1822)

The room itself is a work of art, so you can enjoy the museum from many different angles.

The chairs placed throughout the room are also historic chairs.

Please be careful not to sit on it.

It is an elaborate work of art down to the smallest detail.

It’s easy to miss them when you’re absorbed in the painting, so be sure to look carefully.

Claude Monet （1840-1926）

Impression, soleil levant (1872)

It is said that he painted the view from the window of the Hotel del’Amirauté in Le Havre in November 1872.

It is a work of great importance in the history of art, and is the origin of the name “Impressionism“.

Cathédrale de Rouen, effet de soleil, fin de journée（1892）

From 1892 to 1894, Rouen Cathedral was painted in a series of paintings.

He concentrates his work on the west side of the cathedral.

It is also said that there are 33 works in Rouen Cathedral.

En promenade près d’Argenteuil（1875）

This work was done when he had his studio in Argenteuil, near Paris.

It depicts his wife, Camille, and his son, Jean.

Les Tuileries（1876）

This work depicts the view from the apartment on Rue de Rivoli of Victor Chocque, a supporter of Cézanne.

The view is from the fifth floor of the apartment, so the work is looking down on the Tuileries.

There are said to be several paintings, but the one in the Marmottan Museum is said to be the best.

Gare Saint-Lazare（1877）

This work depicts the area around San Lazar station.

The bridge depicted in the picture has now been destroyed and no longer remains.

Berthe Morisot（1841-1895）

Le jardin à Bougival（1884)

Most of Morisot’s work has been associated with Bougival.

A bold painting of a colorful rose bush.

Bergère couchée（1891）

This work is said to be Morisot’s masterpiece of her later years.

Painted in Mézy, Yvelines, a suburb of Paris, the work was modeled on Gabrielle Dufour, a friend of his beloved daughter Julie.

In particular, Morisot’s touch and exquisite use of color in this work have been highly praised.

Enfants à la vasque（1886）

Painted at her home on rue Villejuste, near the Place de l’Etoile.

It depicts Marthe Givaudan, the concierge’s daughter, and her beloved daughter Julie playing with a large piece of pottery.

The blue and white Chinese porcelain vase is said to have been a gift from Manet to Morisot.

Gustave Caillebotte（1848~1894)

La Leçon de piano（1879) 

It depicts two women taking a lesson in front of an upright piano.

This theme was a favorite of Renoir’s in the following years.

There is a Renoir work in the Musee de l’Orangerie, so it might be a good idea to compare and contrast.

Camille Pissarro（1830~1903)

One of Pissarro’s early paintings of the city of Paris.

It beautifully depicts the bewilderment of people due to the snow.

Auguste Renoir （1841～1919）

A portrait by Renoir, a friend of Morisot’s, of Morisot’s beloved daughter, Julie.

Julie’s sad gaze on the gray background is impressive.

Of course, many of the products are related to Monet, but these days the gift stores in museums sell so many different things.

How was it?

It’s a small museum on the outskirts of Paris, but it’s well worth a visit.

It is a very satisfying museum, not only for Monet, but also for other wonderful works.

It is especially famous for the many works by Morisot that are on display.

A whole room on the first floor is devoted to Morisot’s work, and it is very worth seeing.

I highly recommend that you watch it as well.

If you visit the Orangerie Museum beforehand to see Monet’s works and Renoir’s, you will enjoy the museum from a different angle.

And the 16th arrondissement of Paris is a very safe area.

I recommend taking a stroll around this area, which is a bit more laid back and far from the hustle and bustle of central Paris.

You can also take the metro from La Muette, but I recommend taking bus 32 towards the Trocadero and visiting the Eiffel Tower.

Finally, if you want to go to a museum in Paris but don’t want to wait in line and it’s crowded, this is the museum you should visit.

This may be a good opportunity for you to fall in love with museums.

The building that houses the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris is located on the east side of a building called the Palais de Tokyo, which was built for the 1937 Paris World Exposition.

Entrance

There is a large door entrance on rue du Président Wilson, but you actually enter from the other side, toward the Seine.

There are big letters that say ENTRÉE, so you can easily find your way there.

Walk through the large pillars and along the rounded part of the building.

Walk further, following the letters ENTRÉE.

There are sculptures placed along the way.

After more walking, we finally reach the entrance.

If you want to take the shortest route to the museum, you can get off at the Alma-Marceau metro station and walk along New York Avenue along the Seine River to reach the entrance.

Admission

The Musée de la Ville de Paris is run by the city, so admission is free.

Please note, however, that only the permanent collection can be viewed for free, and special exhibitions require a separate admission fee.

The entrance fee for special exhibitions varies from time to time, but is set between 5 and 12 euros.

Thomas Houseago (born 1972) is a British artist.

He is currently based in Los Angeles, focusing on sculpture.
