Nancy, about 350 km from Paris, is famous for being the place where Art Nouveau flourished.

The town of Nancy was created around the 11th century, but it was Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine in the 18th century, who laid the foundations of the present city.

Originally a city of glassworks, various industries and arts developed in the 19th century as the population grew after the Franco-Prussian War.

The city is very compact, so it is just the right size for a day’s tour.

How to get from Paris to Nancy

From Paris to Nancy, you can take the high-speed TGV train, operated by French Railways.

It takes about 1 hour 40 minutes.

This is an e-ticket from Paris to Nancy.

This trip left Paris at 7.30am and arrived in Nancy at 9.20am.

The fare was very cheap and we travelled in 1st class.

It is located less than a five-minute walk from Paris East train station, so it is very easy to plan your way there and back without having to take the metro or bus.

We left the hotel at about 7.15 am, but it was dark outside in Paris in winter.

It was also raining and it felt very cold.

Security is not a particular concern.

If you are going out in summer, at this time it is light outside.

Gare de l’Est

People are sparse, probably due to winter and rain.

This was partly due to the fact that it was a particularly cold day.

The hotel can be seen from the station and looks fantastic.

There were not many people in the station.

There is a stove in the centre of the aisle, so everyone gathers there.

When you arrive at the station, check the timetable first.

Paris trains do not know what platform they will depart from until close to departure.

The TGV to Nancy, which we used, departs at 7.38 am.

Departure platforms are not shown even 18 minutes before.

The TGV carriage number and the entrance to the train are marked in alphabetical characters.

Choose a place where the alphabet and your train number are the same.

This time it was train 13, so walk towards B.

The main train stations in Paris have automatic turnstiles.

You can pass through the gate by holding up the QR code on your smartphone or printed ticket.

Arrive at Nancy station almost on time.

The journey, which took about one hour and 40 minutes, really flew by.

Overall, the number of passengers was low.

It is not a very big station, so there is no need to get lost.

I use various train stations in the French regions, but Nancy station is quite lonely.

However, it can be a little crowded at certain times of the day.

Nancy train station is small for a train station, but is a key transport link between Paris and Vienna and Luxembourg, Lyon and Marseille.

They want to expand the line, but this is difficult due to the small size of the original station and its location in the town centre.

Porte Stanislas

The Porte Stanislas is located between leaving Brasserie Excelsior and the bus stop.

It was created in the 18th century as part of Prince Stanislas’ urban development plan.

It is said to be Doric in style, so it is worth a visit.

After breakfast at Brasserie Excelsior and admiring the Porte Stanislas, head to the Musée de l’École de Nancy.

We managed to get from Nancy train station to the Musée de l’École de Nancy within walking distance, but we took the bus because it takes 20 to 30 minutes and we also wanted to conserve our energy.

The nearest bus stop to Brasserie Excelsior is Tour Thiers Gare.

Several lines serve the area, but we will be using line 11.

This is the blue line on the map introduced earlier.

The boarding procedure is the same as for buses in Paris.

You can buy tickets in advance or from the bus conductor.

The fare is EUR 1.3 if purchased in advance and EUR 1.5 if purchased from the conductor.

Bus tickets are the size of a business card.

It is quite large.

This time, the bus came as soon as it arrived at the station, so I bought it on board.

After visiting the Musée de l’École de Nancy, return by bus to the centre.

From Nancy Cathedral, head to Place Stanislas via Rue Maurice Barres.

The time spent on this visit to Nancy was approximately five hours.

The museum could also be viewed at leisure.

We only used the bus to get to the Musée de l’École de Nancy, which was just right to save time and conserve energy.

Summary

Overall, the trip was highly satisfactory.

Travel time from Paris is less than two hours, so you won’t get bored.

The city of Nancy has a slightly different atmosphere to other French cities, making it a good choice for the more seasoned traveller.

The city is very well maintained, with Art Nouveau buildings everywhere, and the roads are very clear and easy to navigate without getting lost.

Note that since we visited in the cold season, we only looked into Pépinnières Park from the outside, but for those who visit in the warmer months, it is a great place to rest and relax.

Buying sandwiches from a bakery and having lunch is also a good way to spend time.

Opened in 1849 under the name Embarcadère de Strasbourg.

In 1854, the name of the station was changed to the current ‘Gare de l’Est’.

In 1883, the station became the first station for the Oriental Express to Constantinople.

Security

If you use East Station, you may be concerned about security.

Many people are concerned because it is located right next to the less reputable North Station.

However, as far as the East Station premises are concerned, there is no problem.

Unlike North Station, East Station is not served by the RER B line, so trains coming through unsafe areas are not served.

If anything, it is mainly people heading eastwards or coming back, so it is not too crowded.

Of course, that doesn’t mean it is safe, and if you are as attentive as you normally are in Paris, you can avoid trouble.

Pickpockets etc. are of course present, so please be careful with your personal belongings.

The main ground floor is very clearly laid out.

Enter through the main entrance and you will see a line of departure platforms from No. 2 to No. 30 on your left, so head for the platform when your destination is displayed on the electronic board.

There is a metro entrance on the basement floor.

It is easily accessible via an escalator.

The station offers a wide range of facilities.

There are many shops and restaurants on the ground floor, as well as luggage storage (coin lockers) and toilets on the basement floor, which are clean and well maintained.

Overall, the station is cleaner and easier to understand than other major stations.

The front of the station is tidy, not too crowded and does not have the dubious atmosphere of the northern stations.

Vehicle access is also restricted, making it possible to use the front of the station in peace.

In this issue, we would like to briefly introduce some of the vast collection.

Auguste Rodin（1840-1917）

Rodin is known as the father of modern sculpture.

Even those who are not interested in art have heard of the name of a representative work, The Thinker.

Rodin, unusually for an artist of his time, did not have a professional schooling.

He has taken the Beaux-Arts de Paris three times and failed all three times.

He then worked for a living as a sculptor’s staff and decorator.

Rodin’s twenties were tumultuous: in 1862, at the age of 22, his sister died and he decided to enter a convent himself, but Peter Julian, then head of the convent, encouraged him to pursue a career in sculpture.

In 1864, at the age of 24, he met his wife, Rose Beuret.

Later, after the birth of his children, he worked for a while for Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse.

He was called up during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, but did not serve because of his short-sightedness and went to Belgium.

In Belgium, he worked as a decorator on the stock exchange.

In 1875, he travelled to Italy to see works of art.

In Italy, he was struck by Michelangelo’s work, and returned to work on it.

In 1877, at the age of 37, He finally returned to Paris.

He presented L’Âge d’airain (The Age of Bronze), but was suspected of being extremely realistic, and later made his reputation known throughout France by creating a work larger than a real-size man (Saint Jean Baptiste).

In 1880, he was commissioned to create a monument for the construction of a museum, and began work on the work that was to adorn it: the Gates of Hell.

However, the order was subsequently dropped, but Rodin devoted his subsequent activities to the production of The Gates of Hell.

In 1882, he succeeded Alfred Boucher as lecturer in sculpture.

Here he meets Camille Claudel.

In the garden, surrounded by trees, is Rodin’s famous work, LE PENSEUR (The Thinker).

The work was originally named Le Poète (The Poet).

Rodin used it as his studio for 10 years from 1908.

The Rodin Museum opened in 1919.

The l’hôtel Biron, where Rodin’s works are exhibited, was completed in 1732.

When the government decided to purchase the Hotel Billon in 1911, Rodin asked to keep the building as a museum in return for donating his work to the government.

Rodin’s request was heeded and the museum was not demolished but continued as a museum.

Unfortunately, Rodin died before the museum opened.

Time required

As well as sculptures, there are also paintings on display, so you can look around without getting bored.

There are many Rodin’s works, not only in the museum but also in the gardens, so it will take you quite some time to look around.

If you look around quickly, you can see the whole place in 40 minutes in the museum and 30 minutes in the gardens, or 1 hour 30 minutes overall.

However, the gardens are large, so it will take two to three hours if you take your time to look at the artworks and admire the gardens.

(We recommend that you allow plenty of time for your visit, especially during the pleasant months and when the roses are in bloom, as the gardens are very spectacular).

One of the most popular attractions in Paris is the flea market.

The three most popular of these flea markets are Clignancourt, Montreuil and Vanves.

Each has its own characteristics and attractions, but the flea market in Vanves, which we will introduce here, is easily accessible from the centre of Paris and is located in a relatively safe area, so even beginners to Paris can visit without worry.

Now let me introduce you to some of them.

History

It is said to have started at the end of the 19th century, selling scrap metal and other materials.

Started in 1920 as a flea market in Vanves.

How to find the best bargains

The Vanves flea market is open from 7am.

However, even if you rush out at 7am, most shops are not yet open.

The shops actually open between about 9:00 and 10:00.

Note that, as is often said, shops near the entrance may be priced slightly higher.

How to get to the Vanves flea market

There are several ways to get to the Vanves flea market from the centre of Paris, but this time we will show you the most straightforward way, using metro line 13.

Metro line 13 passes through Saint-Lazare station, Champs-Élysées – Clemenceau and Invalides.

If you are staying away from Line 13, change to Line 13 at one of the stations for Porte de Vanves.

When you reach Porte de Vanves, take exit 2.

Kindly indicate Marché aux Puces.

Also check the signage on the ceiling and take exit 2.

When you reach ground level via Exit 2, head in the opposite direction of travel.

You will see a tram station, but do not head in this direction.

Go in the opposite direction to the tram station and turn left, following the signs to Marché aux Puces.

The vanves flea market begins at the back of the bus station.

It was around 10.00 am and it was raining quite heavily.

Here are the routes we will be introducing.

From Metro Porte de Vanves station, via Rue Marc Sagné to Rue Georges Rafnestre to the ring road.

First, the flea market begins at the Place du Porte de Vanves.

It was around 10am when we arrived and it was raining quite heavily, but several shops managed to stay open.

The entrance area is often set high, so just look at it for now.

Crossing the Porte de Vanves street, we finally enter the main venue.

Quite a few shops are open for business, although some shops have not yet laid out their goods.

Lots of people come and go, even on rainy days.

I’m not sure, but all sorts of things are laid out on the table.

The shops here have no tents, so everything in the queue is wet.

Many shops sold crockery.

The crockery in the set looked expensive.

It is fun to look at, but it can be quite confusing as to which one to buy.

Shops with tents give the impression of selling proper products.

If you looked at each one slowly, it would take hours.

It was raining quite a bit and I was worried if they weren’t open, but if so many shops were open, it was no problem at all.

The product itself was very easy to see as there were probably fewer people than on a sunny day.

Any of these are for sale for €1, €3 or €5.

Turn right onto rue Georges Lafenestre.

There are mobile cafés and other cafés in the area.

If you need a break, this is the best place to go.

Many shops have also set up shop on the footpath along rue Georges Lafenestre.

There are more second-hand clothing and accessory shops than along Marc Sangnier Street.

There was also a second-hand bookshop, but it didn’t have many books on display, probably because of the rain.

There were also few second-hand clothing shops.

Lots of cars parked on rue Georges Lafenestre.

The outskirts of the flea market were marked by empty booths, probably due to the rain.

Purchases

A full set of teapots was purchased at a shop specialising in tableware on the way.

The shopkeeper told me it was French crockery and I bought it, but when I checked it out it was actually made in Czechoslovakia.

(It was good because it was a fun memory, but…)

I also bought the egg-shaped accessory case in the picture because it was so beautiful.

It was not clear where this was also made.

Toilet information

When visiting a flea market, the biggest problem is toilets.

If you are planning to visit one of the cafés, good, but in fact there are not many cafés themselves where you can drop in casually.

Public toilets are therefore recommended, and there are three recommended toilets near the flea market site.

This location is just a short distance from the metro, Porte de Vanves station.

It is located before heading to the flea market and is often relatively empty.

Enter the flea market site, Rue Marc Sagné, and a short distance later you will find Rue Maurice Nogues, where you will find toilets.

This one is relatively busy and you will have to wait a little.

Toilets at the junction of Marc Sangnier and Georges Lafenestre streets.

This is also often relatively crowded.

Summary

I was worried that the flea market might not be open on a rainy day, but when I visited, I found that quite a few shops were properly open.

In places, some booths were left empty, but this was not a problem for tourists visiting.

It was quite wet at the time, but it is still open, so even if rain is forecast for the day you visit, it should be fine.

Overall, my personal impression was that it was subtle.

You can buy what you like, but without prior knowledge, I had no idea which products were good and which were more expensive.

(Basically, there’s no such thing as cheap and good.)

If you want to visit a flea market in Paris, the Vanves flea market is an accessible and safe place to visit.

Lots of shops line both sides.

The atmosphere of the floor and ceiling gives a sense of history.

It is a very nice art gallery.

The Passage also has cafés and restaurants.

There are many art galleries in the Passage.

This is a second-hand bookshop.

The photographic shop at the back is over 100 years old and has been operating at this location since 1901.

This is the entrance on the Grange Batoulière street side.

Passage Verdeau is a good passage for those who want to take a leisurely stroll, as it is not busy with many people.

Passage Jouffroy, built in 1836.

The street is named after Félix de Jouffroy-Gonsans, who was the owner of the building.

This is the busiest street of the three passages presented here.

The street stretches for 140 metres and is crowded with many shops.

It is also famous for the Grevin Museum and the Hôtel Chopin.

Following Passage Verdeau, this is the entrance on the Rue des Granges Batoulières side.

A large canopy lets in so much light that it’s easy to forget that it’s a passage.

The shop is called PARIS EST UNE PHOTO.

Charming paintings and old posters are available for sale.

It may also make a good souvenir.

Librairie Gribaudo Vandamme is a second-hand bookshop.

There is a €5 corner, which is quite enjoyable.

Many people stop at second-hand bookshops.

The area is crowded with many people, from locals to tourists.

Turn left at the end of the bookshop and you will come to a staircase, at the end of which is the Grevin Museum.

Hotel Chopin is on the left.

There is also a clock on top of the hotel.

The scenery around here is really lovely.

The street becomes a straight line again, followed by a beautiful canopy.

It’s an old-fashioned toy shop.

This is Le Valentin, a recommended café.

It is a tourist attraction, but they make a good cup of tea.

La Maison du Roy is a shop with gorgeous antiques.

Marks and Spencer is also available.

The long passages are over in a flash.

One of the oldest existing passages is the Passage des Panoramas.

The Passage, opened in 1800, appears to have originally been the gateway to the Duchess of Luxembourg.

This passage has many restaurants.

Chairs and tables are arranged in a narrow street.

This shop also has tables and chairs lined up in the aisles.

FrenchParadox – Canard & Champagne has a slightly trendy, casual atmosphere.

When you come to the middle of the Passage, it is much brighter.

As expected, there are fewer pedestrians, probably due to the large number of restaurants.

There is a crossroads on the way.

There are no people here.

We visited in the evening and got the impression that there were very few people.

It will be crowded at night.

The end of the passage is divided into several entrances and exits.

Entrance/exit on St Mark’s Street.

The view is a little disappointing, with rubbish and other objects placed on the ground.

Summary

We have introduced three passages in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.

Historically, the oldest is the Passage des Panoramas, but it is dominated by eating and drinking establishments and lacks another attraction as a tourist attraction.

Floors and interiors were not well maintained.

In the middle, Passage Jouffroy is the most recommended passage as it is very spectacular and crowded with lots of shops and people.

The other Passage Verdeau was less crowded but nicely maintained and therefore very pleasant to walk through.

This is a good passage for those who want to walk slowly and leisurely.

If you have time, we recommend walking around and seeing all the passages, but if you have limited time, please visit just Passage Jouffroy in the middle.

You will find a different Paris to the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre.

In this issue, we would like to introduce you to the ‘Tax-free procedures when travelling from Paris to Switzerland’.

As Switzerland is not a member of the EU, duty-free procedures must be completed before entering the country.

This is fine if you are travelling to Switzerland by plane, but if you are travelling to Switzerland by rail, the duty-free procedure becomes more difficult.

Let me quickly introduce you to what procedures you need to follow.

Tax-free procedures in France

Conditions for obtaining tax exemption.

• Non-EU residents
• 16 years of age or older
• Staying in the country for less than 6 months
• Minimum purchase amount of 100€ in one shop

Tax-free formalities

If you are returning from Charles de Gaulle airport, you can use the ‘PABLO’ (duty-free customs clearance system) for easy processing.

If returning via Switzerland

If you are returning from France via Switzerland, the duty-free procedure is a little more complicated.

This is particularly important if you enter Switzerland by rail and fly back to your own country.

When flying from Paris to Switzerland

If you are flying from Paris to Switzerland, both Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports have duty-free application desks or Pablo.

Travelling by train from Paris to Switzerland

If you are travelling by train from Paris to Switzerland, you will mainly use the TGV, which arrives and departs in Paris at Gare de l’Est or Gare de Lyon.

Below are the routes to the main train stations in Switzerland.

Only typical routes are introduced here.

Receive confirmation stamps on board the TGV

If you are travelling to Switzerland by rail, you must complete duty-free formalities before entering Switzerland.

If a customs officer is on board the TGV train, he or she will stamp the duty-free documents with a confirmation stamp and drop the documents in a special post box at the arrival station.
You will now receive your detax.

However, it can be difficult to find customs officers on board, so it is advisable to check where they are when the conductor comes to check the tickets.

Please note that if you are unlucky enough to find a customs officer, or if no customs officer is on board, you may not be able to get duty free.

Tax-free formalities at Basel station.

There is a duty-free office at Basel station, which can be used by those who plan to use Basel station.

Points to note when entering Switzerland

If you buy expensive goods while in France and bring them into Switzerland, you will be subject to taxation.

Caution should also be exercised if you are buying alcoholic products such as wine.

The maximum amount that can be brought into Switzerland tax-free is CHF 300.

(Think 300€).

Please note that it does not matter that the journey is within Europe.

Summary

If you travel from Paris to Switzerland by train, the duty-free procedure is very cumbersome.

In the worst case scenario, it should be assumed that the tax exemption procedure is not available.

Note that some French shops may offer cash refunds on the spot.

(although this will be lower than the amount refunded to your credit card).

Even in this case, tax exemption procedures are still required.

Please note that if you do not follow the tax exemption procedure and leave it untouched, your registered credit card will later be charged for the amount of the surcharge added to it.

Last but not least, the best way to get tax exemption is to ‘not return from Switzerland’.

It is strongly recommended, especially if you plan to buy luxury brands or other expensive items in France, to enter Switzerland first and then arrange an itinerary to return home from Paris.

I had never had the opportunity to use a laundromat before, so I was a little apprehensive, but when I actually tried it, it was so convenient that I regretted why I hadn’t used it before.

We would like to introduce you to these convenient laundries.

Laverie Libre Service

There are many laundries in Paris anyway.

In case you are wondering, the French word for laundromat is “Laverie Libre Service”, and although there are slight differences in the words written in each shop, if it says “Laverie”, it is definitely a laundromat.

(Even if you don’t understand French, most laundries have glass windows so you can see them from the outside…)

Safe/Unsafe

Security is a concern when using laundries.

The laundromat itself is safe.

With regard to security, it is better to consider the security of the place used itself.

Laundries near hotels and other places where most people stay can be used without any problems.

Of course, do not use laundries with broken windows or that are not clean.

How to find the location

Finding a laundromat is not difficult.

You can easily find them by walking around the neighbourhood of the hotel or other places where you are staying.

They can also be found using Google Maps.

Open your place of stay and enter “Laverie Libre Service” or “Laverie” in the search, which will give you a lot of suggestions.

Note that prices may vary slightly from shop to shop, but should not be too much of a concern as there should be no major differences.

How to use the washing machine

Let’s take a quick look at how to use laundries.

Choosing a washing machine

When you first enter the shop, you will see many washing machines.

Washing machines are colour-coded according to capacity.

Basically, the main types are 6 kg and 8 kg, with one or two other larger types of 12 kg and 23 kg installed.

(composition varies from shop to shop).

Each washing machine is also numbered, so remember the number of the machine you use.

First, choose a washing machine according to your laundry capacity.

Colours vary from shop to shop, but this is the 6 kg type in this case.

Open the door and place the laundry inside.

The other is this silver tone type.

The capacity is 8 kg, which was used in this case.

Ensure that the door is securely closed once the laundry has been put in.

Some doors do not close properly if broken or otherwise.

Always check before moving on to the next step.

Selecting a laundry course

Select the washing course.

The content is almost the same in all laundries.

1. High temperature: 90 degrees: 60 minutes
2. Medium temperature: 60 degrees: 55 minutes
3. Low temperature: 40 degrees: 50 minutes
4. Cold temperature: 20 degrees: 45 minutes

Normally, choose number 2 or 3.

Number 1 may cause the laundry to shrink.
Choose with care.

If you are washing items such as knitwear, select number 3 or lower.

The washing machine in this case has a digital display.
Some shops have button-operated washing machines.

Add detergent.

The detergent compartment is divided into four boxes.

• PRE-LAVAGE: pre-wash
• LAVAGE: full wash
• JAVEL: Bleach.
• ADOUCISSANT: fabric softener

There is also a washing machine with three boxes.

This type does not have a box for bleach.

Some also have rubberised lids.

It is usually possible to buy detergent and fabric softener at any laundromat.

(In some shops, only detergents are available).

Several types of detergents and fabric softeners are available in some shops.

On the left is the fabric softener and on the right is the detergent.

Some shops may only sell detergent.

In this case, buy fabric softener from a local supermarket.

There are many different types, but if you look carefully in the shelves, you will find smaller sized fabric softeners.

The softener is sold in sets of three.

It is difficult to cut by hand, so it is better to have scissors.

Payment

Let’s look at payment methods.

Laundromats in France have a single billing machine, which manages all the washing machines.

It looks somewhat difficult when written in French, but it is very easy to operate.

First, enter the number of your washing machine and press # (sharp) at the end.

The fare is displayed and you can insert coins or notes.

Wait until the laundry is finished.

Depending on the course you choose, it will take about 40~50 minutes to finish the laundry.

You can wait until the laundry is done, but as you would indeed be bored, you can go shopping if there is a supermarket or similar in the vicinity.

It is unlikely that clothes will be stolen during laundering.

However, it is important to note that if the laundry is left in place for an extended period of time, it may be taken out of the washing machine.

How to use the dryer

Once the laundry has been washed successfully, the next step is to use the dryer.

You will find these boxes, so put the clothes you have finished washing in these and move the laundry to the dryer.

If you are concerned about hygiene, you can transfer them into your own bag or other container.

Payment

The payment method is the same as for washing machines.

Press Sharp after the number of the dryer and the charges will be displayed.

When ready, select the temperature.

After setting the temperature, press the green button.

This will start the drying process.

Few people are waiting for the washing to finish, but rather many are waiting for the drying to finish.

It is better to be at the laundromat shortly before the dryers stop, as dry clothes can be stolen.

The exterior of the building is very well balanced with the white base.

The lighting when it gets dark is also a positive feature.

The interior of the shop is unfortunately not quite as good.

Kitchen utensils visible from the outside do not look good either.

I’ve seen many bakeries in Paris, but I’ve never had this feeling before.
