Macarons are now famous not only in France, but also internationally.

It is so popular that even in Paris, renowned pastry chefs, including Pierre Hermé, compete with its taste.

In fact, the birthplace of these very popular macarons is in Nancy.

The shop is Maison Des Soeurs Macarons, which we are introducing here.

Let us quickly introduce you to a shop that has been making macarons unchanged for more than 200 years since its establishment.

Features

Since 1793, macarons have been made from Provencal almonds, egg whites and sugar.

Its recipe has been passed down from generation to generation and is not publicly available.

Macarons began with two sisters, Marguerite GAILLOT (Sister Suzanne) and Marie MORLOT (Sister Marie MORLOT), selling them.

Exterior

The shop on Gambetta Street, which leads to Stanislas Square, is easily recognised by its dark green exterior.

As it has a long history, I imagined it to be a large shop, but it is quite small.

The show windows display macarons, of course, but other confectionery items, such as chocolates, take up more space, so it is difficult to recognise the shop as being famous for macarons if you just happen to pass by.

Interior

When you enter the shop, the left-hand side is all showcases.

And chocolate takes up most of that showcase.

Various types of chocolate are available.

I thought it was the birthplace of macarons, so I imagined it was a cake shop, but it was more like a chocolate shop.

In addition to chocolate, there is a wide range of other confectionery products, such as jellies.

This is Nougat, a famous pastry in France.

The shelves display juices and honey.

A wide range of caramels is also available.

Where the macarons were located, they were displayed on a shelf at the far end of the sales area.

Prices start at EUR 8.7, sold by the dozen.

Note that the shop was very busy when we visited.

There were many locals, but not many people were buying macarons.

Review

Macarons can be packaged in a box like this one.

The box is opened and further wrapped in wrapping paper.

Open the wrapper and you will find six macarons stuck to the paper.

There is another one of these, so there are 12 macarons in total.

There was nothing particularly noteworthy about the taste.

The exterior looks normal.

As for the interior, it had a good old-fashioned feel.

Prices are also normal.

Staff were efficient and helpful.

Ease of purchase is a bit of a hassle to ask for macarons only, as they are located at the far end of the sales floor.

The location is conveniently situated in a central tourist area.

You can buy it during the sightseeing tour or on the way back to the train station after seeing the Nancy Museum.

Overall, the evaluation was somewhat harsh.

Although the shop has the impact of being the birthplace of macarons, it does not have much of an impact in terms of taste.

However, this is not surprising considering that the image we usually have of macarons is a modern one, and that these products are in fact more original…

In addition, the product packaging was excellent.

The outer box has an old-fashioned feel and a luxurious feel.

Furthermore, the wrapping paper that wraps the products is stylish and adds to the anticipation.

The shop itself does not sell a variety of macarons, but is just a chocolate shop that sells macarons within a chocolate shop.

In addition, there are many other products on sale, so I felt there was a bit too much clutter.

It is a matter of taste, but I think a more relaxed atmosphere would have been better.

We encourage everyone to stop by and taste the macarons when visiting Nancy.

The third part of the Nancy Museum collection focuses on the glass works of the Daum Brothers (Daum Frères), which are located in the museum’s basement.

As well as the glass works, the exhibition rooms are also part of the town fortifications from the 15th to 17th centuries, which give the place a unique atmosphere.

This is a must-see attraction that you won’t find in any other museum, so be sure to stop by when you visit Nancy.

The beginnings of the Dome were started by Jean Daum, the father of the brothers.

In 1878, he took control of la verrerie Sainte-Catherine de Nancy, (glassworks).

(Originally only an equity stake, but had to be bought out due to poor management).

Jean’s eldest son, Auguste Daum, joined around 1879, while his brother Antonin Daum joined around 1890.

The elder brother will mainly be active in management, while the younger brother will be active in the production of artworks.

Art department established between 1889 and around 1991.

Work with a range of artists to create artworks.

The work he created with his first designer, Jacques Grüber, was exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, where it was a great success.

At the 1900 World’s Fair, it was exhibited jointly with Emile Gallé and won the grand prize.

The 1920s saw a shift from Art Nouveau to Art Deco.

Business is growing steadily.

After World War II, the company produced clear, shiny crystal.

The company also collaborates with Cesar, Dali and others to produce artworks.

Management deteriorated after 1980.

In 1982/83, due to financial difficulties, part of the historical collection was sold.

In 1985, the Dome family left management.

The dome company is currently operating, but is managed by a separate company.

The Nancy Museum of Fine Arts is located in the heart of Nancy, on a corner of Place Stanislas.

The museum, built on Napoleon’s orders, is said to have the most extensive collection of art museums in a provincial city.

The Nancy museum is also home to Rubens, Caravaggio, Impressionist and contemporary art, as well as the unparalleled collection of the Dome brothers’ stunning glass works.

Works confiscated from the nobility and churches during the French Revolution form the core of the collection.

In 1801, at the behest of Napoleon, 30 works were brought in from the Louvre.

The museum occupies a pavilion designed by architect Emmanuel Héré for King Stanislaus, the Duke of Lorraine and the King of Poland in the mid-18th century.

Extended in 1936 by Jacques and Michel André.

A second major expansion took place in 1999, doubling its previous size.

The time required

The museum looks small from the outside, but it is spacious inside.

The range of artworks on display is extensive, so you should visit the museum with plenty of time to spare.

It takes 1 hour 30 minutes if you see it in a hurry and more than 2 hours if you see it more slowly.

Those interested in religious paintings or glassware may take even longer.

The building, which stands on Stanislas Square, has been carefully constructed down to the smallest detail.

The beautiful construction of the museum is another feature of the Musée de la Nancy.

The space is well managed, clean and pleasant.

The spiral staircase is another highlight.

The balustrade made by Jean Lamour also shares the same image as the gate of Stanislas Square.

Place Stanislas is considered the most beautiful square in France.

Its beauty is not only limited to France, but is said to be one of the most beautiful in the world.

Features

The square was built between 1751 and 1755 by Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine.

It was designed by Emmanuel Héré (1705-1763).

It measures 125 metres by 106 metres and is where the Museum of Fine Arts, City Hall and the Opera House are built.

There are also six beautifully gilded Rococo style gates.

In 1983, Stanislas Square, Place de la Carriere and Place de l’Alliance were collectively inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Hôtel de ville

At 98 metres wide, it is the largest building on the square.

There is a clock in the top centre of the building, which is also decorated in various ways.

The Tourist Information Centre is located on the far right-hand side towards the front.

Specialities and other products from the Nancy region are also on sale, so be sure to stop by.

Hôtel de la Reine

It stands between City Hall and the Opera House.

It still operates as Nancy Gare Grand Hôtel de la Reine.

It has been used as the National Opera House of Lorraine since 1919.

One of the most spectacular is this Neptune’s Fountain.

The fountain, built in the Rococo style, is the most spectacular spot in Stanislas Square.

It is produced on the theme of Neptune and Amphitrite from Greek mythology.

The cathedral in the centre of the city is one of Nancy’s most popular attractions and symbols.

It is not that big and can be viewed in less time, so please add it to your sightseeing route and stop by.

The time required

The interior of the cathedral is not very big, so half an hour is enough time to look around.

History

Designed and planned in 1700 by architects Giovanni Betto, Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Germain Boffrand.

Construction began in 1703 and took place during the reign of le duc Léopold, King Stanislas.

By around 1760, both the interior and exterior were largely complete.

Art Nouveau emerged in Europe at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The place where Art Nouveau flourished most was Nancy, France.

And at the heart of this were the Nancy School, as Gallé and Jacques Gruber were known.

Musée de l’École de Nancy exhibits a collection of such representative Art Nouveau works.

It is not a very large museum, but the works on display are as good as those in larger museums.

It is one of the must-visit attractions when visiting Nancy.

How to get there

From Nancy train station, you can either walk or take a bus.

It takes 10 minutes by bus or 20-30 minutes on foot.

The time required

Depending on the season you visit, you should only need about an hour to view the museum, even if you take a little longer.

In warmer weather, you can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens.

History

Opened as a museum on 26 June 1964 in the converted residence of Eugène Corbin, patron of Émile Gallé.

The collection of works began after the 1894 Lorraine Exhibition of Contemporary Decorative Arts, when 17 works by Gallé and others were collected.

Exterior

The entrance to the museum on Serjean Blandin Street is so confusing that you almost walk right past it.

The words Musée de l’École de Nancy can be found by the blue door.

A small flag is displayed on the corner of the building.

This is almost the only sign for the museum, so it is quite confusing.

It can be a bit unsettling as there is no one inside the entrance.

In a Paris museum, you have to go through security checks, so there is always someone there.

At the end of the staircase, it looks like an entrance, but it is not.

Walk along the building and turn further right.

Once inside, you can see the building and the garden, which gives the museum an atmosphere of a museum.

The entrance is located around the centre of the picture.

The building on the left is the main exhibition area.

The building is characteristically decorated.

Garden

This is an overall view of the Nancy School Museum.

The museum is in the front and the garden is at the back.

This is a beautiful garden with many flowers, depending on the season you visit.

Not so big, so it doesn’t take long

The arches have been built so they will be very beautiful when the flowers are in bloom.

At the far end of the garden is a circular pavilion, built by Eugène Corbin.

It was built in 1904 to house an aquarium.

The ceiling umbrellas have a Japanese influence.

The building has a unique atmosphere.

It was not possible to go inside on this day.

They say it is decorated with beautiful stained glass by Jacques Grüber.

If you can get in, be sure to take a look around.

Interior

As you enter the museum, the ticket counter is on the right.

Right in front of the entrance is a large table decorated with flowers.

This table also appears to be by Gallé.

Collections

With so many artworks on display, it is no exaggeration to say that everything in the museum is worth seeing.

As a young man, he studied with Gustave Moreau in Paris.

It is displayed on the landing of the staircase from the ground floor to the first floor.

The museum is divided into many rooms, where furniture and other objects are arranged to recreate the atmosphere of the period.

All the rooms are very nice and filled with many works of art.

I visited without any prior knowledge and was more than able to appreciate the splendour of Art Nouveau.

I had not expected to see so many works by Gallé on display.

Of these, we were particularly impressed this time by the excellence of the furnishings.

The designs, and even the materials, were all of interest.

This is a great place to stop by when visiting Nancy.

We visited the Nancy School Museum first on our sightseeing route, but it is possible to make it the last stop.

However, due to the distance from the station, it is personally better to visit first, considering the time adjustment for the return journey.

And one final note on visiting the Nancy School Museum.

It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

When you come to Nancy, your first stop should be BRASSERIE EXCELSIOR NANCY.

The Art Nouveau building and interior are still preserved today and are very rare in France.

The name ‘brasserie’ means that there is a wide variety on the menu, and it is open until late at night, but what is particularly recommended is the breakfast menu.

You can choose your breakfast from a selection of three courses, depending on the quantity, so it is not a particular problem if you do not understand French.

A breakfast surrounded by art nouveau works of art is an absolutely unique and wonderful experience.

A stop here at the beginning of your sightseeing trip will motivate you and will be a great start to your day.

1911 Opened by Brasseur (brewer) Louis Moreau.

With its Art Nouveau exterior and interior decorated with works by Nancy School artists and sculptors, the shop has earned a reputation in France as a shop that brings French traditions to the present day.

Exterior

The shop, located on the corner of Rue Mazagran and Rue Henri-Poincaré, has a more relaxed atmosphere than one might expect when viewed from a distance.

The building, built by Lucien Weissemburger and Alexandre Mienville, may be better seen up close.

When approaching the shop, there was an atmospheric entrance on the corner, so we tried to enter from here, but unfortunately this was closed.

(may be due to construction work etc.).

The entrance was on the Rue Henri-Poincaré side.

The shop’s logo is in the Art Nouveau typeface Arnold Böcklin.

It is recommended to walk down the street and admire the glass piece by piece.

Very beautiful typeface.

Interior

You enter the shop through a long curtain.

The chandeliers are eye-catching.

Art Nouveau chandeliers and ceilings, a unique atmosphere like no other.

The bar counter is ordinary, but the shelves behind it attract the eye.

Mirror with beautiful curved lines.

Gentle light illuminates mahogany walls.

Seats were taken at the far end by the window.

It was a very good seat with a panoramic view of the restaurant.

The restaurant was very empty as it was a little off breakfast time.

Nevertheless, a few locals were present.

Garçon only speaks French.

I wanted to enter the shop from here because of my mood.

Toilets

Toilets are located at the bottom of the stairs at the entrance to the restaurant we have just entered.

There is a toilet at the end of a staircase decorated with a large mirror.

It is free to use and there is no specific PIN or other type of PIN.

Menu

The menu is simple.

I don’t think I’ve seen these simple menus recently.

The last page is dessert.

All menus here are also basically in French.

Review

This time I ordered Le petit déjeuner “EXCELSIOR”.

As shown in the menu above, there are three breakfast options to choose from, but I chose the most expensive course.

The mini baguettes were very tasty.

Croissants and pain au chocolat are normal.

Butter is isney butter.

Eggs had a choice of cooking methods.

Fried eggs and bacon.

Scrambled eggs.

Is it the French way to put the whole pan on the plate?

The bill was €27.8 for two people.

With tip, the breakfast cost €30.

Staff were not particularly friendly, but they were satisfactory.

Garçon was French-only but very pleasant.

Ease of ordering, but this time it was only breakfast, so there were no problems with the French language.

The location could not be more perfect and convenient as it is visible from Nancy train station.

It is still worth a visit as the interior is excellent.

The restaurant is spacious, so it was no problem to stay longer!

However, the time of year we visited was winter, and it was somewhat cold inside the restaurant.

The Art Nouveau atmosphere can be enjoyed to the full, making it an unmissable spot for a visit to Nancy.

Nancy, about 350 km from Paris, is famous for being the place where Art Nouveau flourished.

The town of Nancy was created around the 11th century, but it was Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine in the 18th century, who laid the foundations of the present city.

Originally a city of glassworks, various industries and arts developed in the 19th century as the population grew after the Franco-Prussian War.

The city is very compact, so it is just the right size for a day’s tour.

If you are interested in art nouveau and glass art, this is a city you should definitely visit.

How to get from Paris to Nancy

From Paris to Nancy, you can take the high-speed TGV train, operated by French Railways.

It takes about 1 hour 40 minutes.

This is an e-ticket from Paris to Nancy.

This trip left Paris at 7.30am and arrived in Nancy at 9.20am.

The fare was very cheap and we travelled in 1st class.

From the hotel to Paris East train station

This time, the accommodation is Staycity Appartement hôtel Gare de l’Est.

It is located less than a five-minute walk from Paris East train station, so it is very easy to plan your way there and back without having to take the metro or bus.

We left the hotel at about 7.15 am, but it was dark outside in Paris in winter.

Paris trains do not know what platform they will depart from until close to departure.

The TGV to Nancy, which we used, departs at 7.38 am.

Porte Stanislas

The Porte Stanislas is located between leaving Brasserie Excelsior and the bus stop.

It was created in the 18th century as part of Prince Stanislas’ urban development plan.

It is said to be Doric in style, so it is worth a visit.

After breakfast at Brasserie Excelsior and admiring the Porte Stanislas, head to the Musée de l’École de Nancy.

We managed to get from Nancy train station to the Musée de l’École de Nancy within walking distance, but we took the bus because it takes 20 to 30 minutes and we also wanted to conserve our energy.

The nearest bus stop to Brasserie Excelsior is Tour Thiers Gare.

Several lines serve the area, but we will be using line 11.

The boarding procedure is the same as for buses in Paris.

You can buy tickets in advance or from the bus conductor.

The fare is EUR 1.3 if purchased in advance and EUR 1.5 if purchased from the conductor.

Bus

After visiting the Musée de l’École de Nancy, return by bus to the centre.

Same as before, number 11, take the bus from Nancy Thermal.

The city of Nancy has a slightly different atmosphere to other French cities, making it a good choice for the more seasoned traveller.

The city is very well maintained, with Art Nouveau buildings everywhere, and the roads are very clear and easy to navigate without getting lost.

Note that since we visited in the cold season, we only looked into Pépinnières Park from the outside, but for those who visit in the warmer months, it is a great place to rest and relax.

Buying sandwiches from a bakery and having lunch is also a good way to spend time.
