History

Inaugurated in 1801 by the Chaptal Decree, issued during Napoleon’s reign.

The first collection of paintings was completely destroyed by fire in 1870 as a result of the Prussian War.

From 1890 onwards, the collection again includes paintings and other works.

Since 1899, it has been on display at Rohan Palace.

Since then, the collection has been further enhanced by overcoming disasters such as the fire of 1947.

The time required

The museum is not very large, but the collection is extensive.

A quick tour can take less than an hour.

If you want to take your time to view the paintings, an hour and a half should be enough.

The location is a little confusing.

The Archaeological Museum of Strasbourg is considered one of the most important archaeological museums in France.

It provides an insight into the history of Strasbourg from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

It is quite difficult to understand each piece individually, but if you look at them in order, you can learn a little about the history of Strasbourg and the Alsace region.

History

The museum is said to have its origins in the legacy of Jean-Daniel Schoepflin (1694-1771), a professor and historian.

Managed by the Société pour la conservation des monuments historiques d’Alsace (SCMHA Alsace Society for the Conservation of Historic Monuments) since 1855.

Most of the collection was destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 but was moved by Alsatian and German scholars to the basement of Rohan Palace in 1896.

From 1909 onwards, the collection was enriched by the efforts of the Swiss archaeologist Robert Forrer (1866-1947).

In 1946, the museum itself was donated to the city of Strasbourg, making it a more complete and leading archaeological museum in France.

Strasbourg Cathedral is the symbol of Strasbourg and the main tourist attraction.

Considered one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Middle Ages, the cathedral is 112 metres wide and its tower is 142 metres high.

History

Several cathedrals had already been built before the construction of the cathedral that stands today began.

Construction of the present Strasbourg Cathedral began after the cathedral, built in 1015, was destroyed by fire.

The cathedral is called “Cathédrale de Wernher” after its founder, L’Evêque Wernher.

Subsequently, changes were made to the cathedral due to several fires.

After a major fire in 1176, the cathedral is rebuilt on the foundations of Wernher Cathedral.

Early architecture was Romanesque, but in 1225, architects and others involved in Gothic architecture in Chartres, Reims and elsewhere were added.

The cathedral was completed in 1439, although it suffered from a lack of funds and other problems along the way.

The cathedral has undergone numerous renovations since then.

In the afternoon the weather cleared up and we were able to photograph the beautiful cathedral.

The view changes when the sun shines.

The front, which is mainly Gothic in style, has an overwhelming presence.

In the centre, above the rose window, the apostles are decorated.

The cathedral is also spectacular in profile.

The side of the cathedral with two rose windows was under construction, but there are two portals underneath.

The façade with its three doors is very finely crafted.

The entrance is on the left as you face the front and the exit on the right.

The rounded, triangular wall section is called the tympanum.

A must-see for Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

The most recommended part of Strasbourg Cathedral is the Astronomical Clock.

It is actually the third clock in Strasbourg Cathedral, dating from 1838-1843.

The first clocks were made between 1352-54.

The second clock ran until around 1788.

They are said to be quite accurate, with a perpetual calendar and indications of the position of the sun and moon.

It appears to be a complex calculator rather than a clock.

The device appears to be calculating the equations of the sun and moon.

Trams are a convenient way to explore Strasbourg.

Strasbourg’s sights are compactly clustered and can be seen on foot, but trams are a more efficient way to get around.

The view of the city from the tram is also very different from the view on foot.

However, as is the case in all regional cities in France, it is a little more difficult to understand how to purchase tickets.

It can be confusing at first, but once you get used to it, you will have no problems.
Please use our website as a guide and try using trams and buses when visiting Strasbourg.

Now let me introduce you to some of them.

CTS

CTS is an abbreviation for Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois.

Founded in 1877, it currently operates six trams and a network of buses.

Ticket types

In fact, choosing the type of ticket may be more difficult than using a ticket machine.

The main types of tickets used by travellers are listed below.

Transfers are not possible with the same ticket.

How to purchase tickets

First, go to the ticket machine.

The photo shows the underground tram station from Strasbourg station, on the way to Gare Centrale.

There is not much of a queue.

The LCD area in the centre is the operation screen, while the calculator-like area on the right is the payment section for credit cards and other payments.

The round central dial controls the screen.

If the CTS logo is displayed in full screen, turn or press the bottom right dial to switch to this screen.

You can select English, so there should be no problems with the operation.

First, choose left or right – if you are buying for the first time, choose right.

Turn the dial to proceed to the purchase screen.

Select URBAN TICKET.

The ticket selection screen is then displayed.

There are so many different types of tickets anyway that it is hard to know which one to buy.

Please refer to the types of tickets we have just introduced to help you choose the right one.

This time there are two of us, but we choose TRIO.

Next, select the number of tickets.

Here we select 1.

Confirmation of payment details.

If there are no errors, proceed to payment.

Please note that payment can only be made in coins or by credit card.

Please note that bills are not accepted.

Insert your credit card in the green section and make a payment.

After inserting the credit card, enter the PIN number using the pin pad on the right-hand side.

No receipt is given.

Tickets come out from under the ticket machine.

Be sure to check that it makes a sound.

For buses, there is a red box inside the vehicle like this, which you can touch to use.

You can also buy tickets on board the bus, but please note that they are more expensive at €2 each.

It has been expanded since its early days to its current form.

It is now a member of the Best Western Group.

Exterior

The hotel is located on the corner of Rue Kuhn and Rue Kageneck.

The building is characterized by its vermilion-red walls.

The entrance is a little confusing, but it is located on the Rue Kageneck side.

It is lit up in red at night, making it quite visible from a distance.

I could get there in the dark without any problems.

However, up close, it wasn’t bad, but I felt that a more subdued color would have been better.

Interior

Lobby

The lobby is very spacious.

The check-in counter is not shown in the photo but is located at the front on the left.

The bar counter is shown in this photo.

Enter the entrance and walk towards the left.

There is a sofa and a table.

The space is so large that at first, I thought this area was where breakfast was served.

The breakfast room is further back here.

The lift is located to the right of the check-in counter.

A further, larger room is available at the back of the lift.

Billiards and board games can also be enjoyed.

I don’t know how many people use it, but it is a spacious layout anyway.

The breakfast room is behind a glass door on the left.

The lobby of the hotel is luxurious and spectacular.

The one with the bar counter has a modern look, while this side offers a classic, relaxed atmosphere.

Room

The room we stayed in was COMFORT TWIN, 4th floor.

The corridors appeared to have been renovated and were very clean and neat.

Room doors are very simple.

The door was a double door.

The rooms are very clean.

The space around the bed is not very large, but there is enough distance from the entrance to the bed.

There is no problem in spreading out suitcases etc.

Opposite the bed is a table and chairs, with closets on both sides.

This storage space is unthinkable in a typical Parisian hotel.

On the right is a hangar closet.

On the left side is a storage space with shelves.

There is also a refrigerator, albeit a small one.

A safety box is also provided.

A toilet is located on the right-hand side of the room.

It is great just because it is not a unit type.

Just a peek will give you a sense of how gorgeous it is.

The washbasin is surprisingly spacious.

It is a fairly large bathtub.

The level of hot water and temperature are both perfect.

Please note that some rooms may not have a bathtub, so it is advisable to make a request when booking.

Breakfast

The breakfast room is reached via the playroom.

You can enter from the bar, but it is a bit of a detour.

There is plenty of space and you can choose at your leisure.

There was a wide variety of bread and they tasted very good.

Fruit, cheese, and yogurt are all available in abundance.

There is a more than adequate selection, from espresso machines to sausages and egg variations.

The eggs were particularly enjoyable, with a machine to boil them yourself.

The rooms are spacious and stylish.

There is ample seating space and you can eat without having to worry about the person next to you.

The pillars and ceilings have a retro feel.

There are so many menus available that it is not possible to choose all of them at one time.

I had to go back to get it many times afterward.

All the food was very tasty.

It is also nice to have a small selection of salads.

Problems with the stay.

There were no problems at all with the hotel.

The only thing to mention is that there is some distance to convenience stores and supermarkets.

If you are physically fit, you can do all the sightseeing on foot.

However, this station was not in its current location and was a distance from the centre, so construction of a new station soon began.

The old Strasbourg station (Gare du Marais-Vert) opened in 1846.

Its station is used until 1883, after which it is used as a market.

It was then demolished in 1974 and is now a shopping mall called Place des Halles.

In 1883, the current station, Strasbourg, was opened.

The facade was built between 2006 and 2007.

Exterior

The domed shape is quite presentable from a distance.

Unfortunately, it was raining that morning, so things are a little hazy.

This photo was taken in the evening.

The weather has improved and the station looks spectacular in the setting sun.

In front of the station is Place de la Gare.

There is also a CTS (tram) entrance in the centre of the square.

However, it is also possible to go directly from Strasbourg Station to the tram station Gare Centrale without entering from here.

Inside a station

Inside the large facade, the old station buildings are still intact.

It is very convenient to get around in the rain without getting wet.

The station did not seem as crowded as the main stations in Paris.

Information counters are also located within this facade.

The station has an old-fashioned feel.

The stained-glass windows are also reminiscent of the old station.

The station is very European.

The hanging lights are also very nice.

When returning, check the timetable for the departure platform.

Go up to the destination platform through the passageway.

Security

Security in the station is not a particular problem.

There will be pickpockets etc, but not as many as in Paris.

Pay attention to your surroundings within normal limits and you will be fine.

Bathroom

There are two toilet facilities at the station.

The fee for each is EUR 0.9.

Follow the signs and you will soon find it.

Coin-operated lockers

Strasbourg train station also provides coin lockers for a fee.

Prices are €5.5, €7.5 and €9.5, depending on the size.

First, take a tram from the starting point, Strasbourg train station, to Strasbourg Cathedral.

You can travel directly from Strasbourg train station to the tram stop.

The station name is Gare Centrale.

Once you have enjoyed the three museums at Rohan Palace, you can continue on foot to your next destination.

Cross the River Ile via the Rue du Bain-aux-Roses, flanked by Rohan Palace.

The view of the River Ile from Pont Ste Madeleine (Madeleine Bridge) is a beautiful sight.

The absence of tall buildings is one of its attractions.

One of Strasbourg’s attractions is that it is only a short walk from downtown and the cathedral to find such lovely views.

Cross the Madeleine Bridge and walk along the river along the Quai des Bateliers.

This street was a busy road for cars not long ago, but has now been converted into a footpath, which is wider and very easy to walk along.

The warmer months are also a good time to spend time in this area.

Destination is Gare Centrale via Musée Art Mod./Gallia.

Buses run approximately every 15 minutes.

If you have a one-day ticket or other ticket, hold your ticket over the red area on the bus.

As with trams, there is a larger LCD guide.

This is great for travellers as they can see at a glance where the buses are running.

Line 10 is a circular line.

The entrance to the Museum of Contemporary Art is five minutes from the bus stop via Rue de Molsheim.

Barrage Vauban

A protective sluice built between 1681 and 1688.

They kept the enemy at bay by regulating the level of the River Ir.

The scenery is also beautiful when lit up at night, so if you plan to stay overnight, visit.

The bridge can also be passed through to the other side.

We did not go through to conserve our strength, but if you are interested, you can try it.

This photo shows the view opposite Barrage Vauban, towards Petite France.

Broglie

Once you have seen the Museum of Contemporary Art Strasbourg and Barrage Vauban, return in the direction of the previous bus stop, this time by tram.

The station is located on Rue de Molsheim.

There were no users.

Trams running through this station are lines B and F.

Whichever you use, head to your next destination, Broglie.

This time, we will travel on the F line, which arrived first.

The interior of the car had a pop of colour.

The train width seemed narrower than on Line A.

After approximately 10 minutes, we arrived in Broglie.

This is the last time the tram will be used.

The city of Strasbourg is served by trams as well as buses, which can considerably reduce travel time.

Rue du Sanglier

Once off at Broglie, head towards Rue du Dôme.

Turn right at the first corner onto Rue du Temple Neuf.

On the left, the street is Rue du Sanglier.

The street is full of history.

The street itself was created in 1361.

The street is not very busy and can be strolled quietly.

The name of the street has changed many times and the current name, Rue du Sanglier, has been in use since 1945.

After Rue du Sanglier, you will come to Rue des Hallebardes, turn right and head towards the cathedral.

Au Pain De Mon Grand-père

The closest and best bakery to the cathedral is here.

The shops on Rue des Hallebardes are always busy.

We bought sandwiches here and ate them on benches around the cathedral.

Biscottes Sante

Address：18 Rue des Serruriers, 67000 Strasbourg, France

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 07:00~19:00

From the cathedral, take the Rue Mercière to the Rue des Serruriers.

After a short walk, you will see Biscottes Sante on your left.

This shop also offers regular baguettes, etc., but the best bet is the Kuglof.

All products are shop-made, simple but very tasty.

It is also an ideal souvenir.

Église Saint-Thomas de Strasbourg

Further along Rue des Serruriers, Église Saint-Thomas de Strasbourg can be seen on the left hand side.

The photos were taken during a night visit, so there is a different atmosphere than during the day.

The church of St Thomas has a very old history, having been used as a place of worship as far back as the 6th century.

The building was completed in 1521, and although there was a change of faith from Catholic to Protestant, it has been renovated and retains its original appearance.

Unfortunately, we were not able to go inside, but if you have time, please take a look.

There is an organ said to have been played by Mozart.

L’atelier 116

Continue straight on past St Thomas’ church to Rue de la Monnaie.

Turn right at the first corner onto Rue du Bouclier and go straight ahead onto Grand’Rue.

The shop on this corner is L’atelier 116.

It is always crowded with many customers.

MACARONS ET INSPIRATION

Address：1 Rue de la Vignette, 67000 Strasbourg, France

Opening hours: Monday 13:30~18:00 Tuesday to Saturday 10:00~19:00

Closed: Sunday

Continue on Grand’Rue to the slightly narrower Rue du Fossé-des-Tanneurs.

(It’s a bit confusing, so keep an eye on the Google map as you go.)

After a short walk, there is a small square on the left, behind which MACARONS ET INSPIRATION is located.

It was a bit confusing to find at first, but look for the colourful macaron figurines outside the shop.

This shop is said to have the best macarons in Strasbourg, so you should definitely stop by.

Boulangerie Pâtisserie DURRENBERGER STRASBOURG

Address：7 Quai Saint-Jean, 67000 Strasbourg, France

Opening hours: 06:00~20:00

Closed: None

The head office is located in Mertzwiller, 40 km north of Strasbourg.

The baguettes are particularly good and are highly recommended.

From Strasbourg to Paris

The return TGV departs from Strasbourg station at 17:17.

It will be train 13, so head to the T shown on the screen.

The colours of the sky at sunset in Europe are unique.

The price did not change at the time of booking, so I will return in 1st class.

Paris East Station was reached in no time at all.

Toilets in Strasbourg

Strasbourg, like other cities in France, does not have a good toilet situation.

There are toilets in most places on this sightseeing route, so you shouldn’t have any problems, but there is a recommended toilet right next to the cathedral in case of an emergency.

It is located on the way from the cathedral to Rohan Palace, so keep it in mind in case of an emergency.

There are signs so it is easy to find.

Toilets are very clean and free to use.

Time required

We left Strasbourg train station at 10am and were able to see all the main sights, including the cathedral and museums.

We took a bit of a diversion as we were thinking mainly of the museum, but we still had plenty of time to get around before our return time.

In effect, the route took less than six hours to complete.

Summary

The actual visit was more compact than I had expected, so I was able to enjoy it with very little stress from moving around.

Another major factor was that the city itself is attractive, not just the sights, so it was enjoyable just to walk around.

Grande Île de Strasbourg, the main tourist attraction of this visit, is not very big, so the route we have described can be seen on foot.

(Of course, given the time involved and the physical demands, it is recommended to use trams and buses…)
