Features
The square was built between 1751 and 1755 by Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine.
It was designed by Emmanuel Héré (1705-1763).
It measures 125 metres by 106 metres and is where the Museum of Fine Arts, City Hall and the Opera House are built.
There are also six beautifully gilded Rococo style gates.
In 1983, Stanislas Square, Place de la Carriere and Place de l’Alliance were collectively inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Hôtel de ville
At 98 metres wide, it is the largest building on the square.
There is a clock in the top centre of the building, which is also decorated in various ways.
The Tourist Information Centre is located on the far right-hand side towards the front.

Hôtel de la Reine
It stands between City Hall and the Opera House.
It still operates as Nancy Gare Grand Hôtel de la Reine.
The hotel has a very good reputation, so if you are planning to stay overnight, you should definitely stay there.
Opéra national de Lorraine
It has been used as the National Opera House of Lorraine since 1919.
Pavillon Jacquet
Various shops are now open, but the restaurant Café du Commerce serves affordable and tasty food.
Musée des beaux-arts
It is considered one of the oldest museums in France.

It is a little difficult to see in this photo, but there is Rue Héré between the two buildings, leading to the Arc Héré.
Arc Héré
It is built around the theme of war and peace.

Monument à Stanislas Leszczynski
The statue of Stanilas sits in the centre of the square.
A statue of Louis XV originally stood here, but was destroyed during the Revolution.
The statue of Stanilas, built in 1831, holds a sword in his left hand and his right hand points in the direction of the north.
Fontaine de Neptune
The Neptune Fountain is located from Stanislas Square in the direction of Parc Pépinier.
There are six golden wrought-iron gates in Stanislas Square, including this fountain.
One of the most spectacular is this Neptune’s Fountain.
The fountain, built in the Rococo style, is the most spectacular spot in Stanislas Square.
It is produced on the theme of Neptune and Amphitrite from Greek mythology.
Grilles
Gate between Pavillon Jacquet and Musée de Nancy.
Beyond that, the street becomes Stanislas Street.

This square connects Stanislas Square to Nancy Palace.
The name of Place Carrières is said to derive from the fact that this was originally the site of equestrian games and knightly exercises.
Place d’Alliance

When they were inscribed on the World Heritage List, three of them were registered together: the Place Stanislas, the Place Carrières and this Place d’Ariens.
There is a fountain in the centre of the park.
Summary
The square itself is not very large, but each one is full of attractions, including the buildings surrounding the square.
There is much to see, including the detailed decoration of the Town Hall, the quiet Nancy Museum and the gilded Neptune Fountain.
